 There are four most common sizes of photographs. Passport Size Photograph: Usually measured in centimeters.  Picture Postcard: Usually measured in inches.  Large Format: Usually measured in inches.

 This type of photograph is used for identification of people in documents like passports, visa’s and various applications etc.  This is usually taken for a single person.  Typical size is 4.5cm x 3.5cm.  An example of a passport size photo is given here.

 This type of photograph is used for capturing scenic beauty.  This picture captures more width than height, the ratio of height to width is times.  Typical sizes are 4”x 6” and 5”x 7”  Examples of postcard size photographs are given here. 4”x 6” Photograph5”x 7” Photograph

 This type of photograph is used for advertising photos, fine art photography, scientific applications etc. It is used where images have to be magnified for more detail.  The ratio of height to width is 1.25 times.  The typical size is 8”x 10”.  Example of a large format photograph is given here.

This picture was a passport sized picture with an aspect ratio of 0.8. It has now been changed to an aspect ratio of 1.5 to represent a 4”x 6” photograph. Notice the distortion in the object.

This picture was a passport sized picture with an aspect ratio of 0.8. It has now been changed to an aspect ratio of 1.25 to represent a 8”x 10” photograph. Notice the distortion in the object.

This picture was a passport sized picture with an aspect ratio of 0.8. It has now been enlarged keeping the same aspect ratio. There is no distortion in the object. It shows you can enlarge a picture by keeping the same aspect ratio. Enlarging the picture will not include any additional view of the object.
