Cloud Filtered MODIS Aqua Ocean Color The most recent addition to our product suite is the MODIS de-clouded ocean color product. If not treated properly, derived product algorithms give erroneous results. To cloud filter MODIS ocean color products, we use the NRL pass-fail tests in the underlying ocean color radiances embedded in our APS ocean color processing system. Cloud contamination for ocean color is a binary mask. If any of the underlying radiances fail due to a cloud, we take this as an indication that atmospheric aerosols are interfering with proper ocean color retrievals. Once these pixels are flagged, we take the extra precautionary step of automatically failing all pixels within 3km to ensure clean ocean color data.

NRL Automated Processing System (APS) Upgrade APS is being upgraded from v3.4 to v3.8. This upgrade improves our current functionality and affords us additional processing options should future need arise. Summary of key changes: Inclusion of new processing capability (ie. MERIS and MODIS L1 processing) Updated algorithms (QAA 670nm) Ocean color processor updates (ie. l2gen updated) Additional features added to the Maps program Improved image browse capabilities and plotting functions Added simultaneous multiple reprocessing ability Redesigned data base tables (ie. Interface with Terascan based AVHRR and OCM) APS libraries rewritten to read/write netCDF/HDF4/HDF5 formats Ruby controller improved (ie. additional logging and debugging, new XML configuration). Improved platform stability, memory usage, and user documentation.
