Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery3 Planning for Disaster Recovery WS03 features to get systems back up Backup utility – included with WS03 to back up and recover data, included registry information Shadow copies of shared volumes – new feature to access previous versions of files in shared volumes ASR – Automated System Recovery – new feature that restores the system volume quickly using floppy disk configuration info & the WS03 CD Advanced startup options – Safe Mode, Last Known Good Configuration, etc. Good when a recent config change makes WS03 unbootable Recovery console – command line environment to troubleshoot

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery4 Backing Up and Restoring Basic tasks Back up and restore files and folders (whole drives) Schedule a backup to occur automatically (assuming you have media in place) Back up WS03 System State data Restore all or portion of the AD database Created an ASR backup Supports wide variety of storage devices and media: tape, logical drives, removable disks Note: cannot backup to an optical disk but can backup to a disk file and copy to CDR/DVDR. Can restore from an optical disk, however.

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery5 Backup Types in WS03 Normal – entire system, including all system files, programs, and data. This is the normal backup in WS03. Incremental – back up only those files that have changed since the last backup using the archive attribute (see next page). Saves time! Differential – same as incremental but does not remove the archive attribute after backup is done (see next page). Saves time! Copy – backs up only the folders/files that are selected Daily – backs up only the files that have been changed on the day the backup is done

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery6 Incremental Backup Details Requires that you first do a normal (full) backup, say Sunday 2 AM Each day do an incremental backup to backup just the files that have changed since the previous backup Must keep the normal tape and each incremental Restores require first restore the normal (full) tape, and then each subsequent day’s incremental backup

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery7 Differential Backup Details Like Incremental, first do a normal (full) backup, say Sunday 2 AM Each day you backup those files that have changed since the normal backup was done Must only keep the last incremental backup tape and the normal tape For restore, first do the normal restore and then restore the differential tape for the last day Is faster than normal backup, but slower than incremental; less tape handing on restores

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery8 Running a Backup Run WS03 Backup Utility from Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools menu (NTBackup.exe is file name) Run Backup Wizard (simplest) Perform backup manually (most control here) Create a scheduled job to do the backup using saved backup parameters (easiest) WS03 Backup is actually a reduced version of 3 rd party BackupExec SW

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery9 Process for a Backup Insert tape media in the drive (assumes drive is connected and installed on your server) Start the Backup program; wait for it to register the tape and scan drives Select Backup tab Drill down to desired level to select drive/folders/files Check box before object(s) to back up Choose destination for backup (drive) Select backup media or filename Select backup type Select Verify read after write if desired Click Start button or select a time for the backup

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery10 Process for a Restore Start|Run|ntbackup.exe or start Backup program Insert media in tape drive Click Restore and Manage Media tab Select backup job to restore (among several) Choose which files/folders to restore Can pick an alternate restore to location Click OK to start, but review restored files to make sure it worked properly

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery12 System State Data: backup/restore System state data includes The registry COM+ class registration database Boot files Certificate services database (if have this service) AC (only on a DC) Cluster service (if server is part of cluster) IIS metadirectory (if IIS is installed) System files Good to get the server back online more quickly System state data checkbox is among the list of things that can be backed up – at left

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery13 Shadow Copies of Shared Folders If a user accidentally deletes a file from a shared folder, this feature lets user restore it more quickly than admin loading it from a previous backup Not enabled in WS03 by default Enable it on a volume by volume basis in Properties of the volume See Shadow Copies tab in Properties Establish schedule for when they are created, say twice a day (Mon-Fri at 7 AM and 12 PM) Click Enable button

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery15 Automated System Recovery -ASR Main purpose-restore a WS03 system to a functional state Hint: cannot do a WS03 Restore unless the WS03 system is functioning Hint: create a new ASR backup every time the server’s system configuration is changed Used when you cannot recover using the Last Know Good Configuration startup option Consists of two elements The ASR backup A floppy disk with specific information

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery16 Using the ASR Backup Boot from the WS03 CD-ROM using the Repair option The information from the ASR floppy disk and the ASR backup is then used to restore appropriate settings Prior versions (NT, WS2K) had Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) for system restores. ASR replaces ERD. Making the ASR from Backup: at Welcome tab there is an ASR Wizard – follow directions

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery17 Advanced Startup Options See Fig for list (similar to Windows XP) Safe Mode – basic files & drivers loaded, debugging Safe Mode with Networking Safe Mode with Command Prompt – not the GUI Enable Boot Logging (can examine the log to see what was loaded and file names) Enable VGA Mode – basic video driver Last Known Good Configuration – registry info is saved after every good boot Directory Services Restore Mode – if it is a DC Debugging Mode – detailed boot info sent to another computer via the serial port for detailed analysis Activate with F8 function key at boot up time

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery18 Recovery Console Experienced admin can perform these tasks Start and stop services Format drives Read and write data on a local hard drive Copy files from a floppy or CD to local drive perform administrative tasks Can run it by booting from the WS03 CD OR can install it on the server and then it is listed as an alternate operating system in the boot menu (see Fig p.501)

Chapter 12 - Backup and Disaster Recovery20 Restart the Server with Comment When you restart the WS03 system, you are asked to give a comment Users will see this status message before the server shuts down – helpful to let them know why you are messing with their system
