Ch 13: Faithful Agents Nick Ward Zenon Marusa Steven Parseghian Kim Gravatt

Wednesday, July 12 Chris spends 6 uneventful months in Genala Joe hires a number of bright young and not-so- young engineers to replace the people who died in the crash Chris finds himself back in his old managerial position and presents a speech at the national meeting of ASCE in Cincinnati A number of people compliment him on his original ideas, including Paul Marshall, an engineer from Walker Engineering, a corporation that does business mostly through subsidiaries They talk and exchange business cards

Wednesday, July 19 Paul Marshall contacts Chris and asks to meet him for dinner to talk about matters of mutual interest Chris asks his partner, Alex, to join him Alex says, “Sure, but don’t expect me to move to Delaware.” Walker is registered as a company in Delaware and has its head office there Chris says, “Me either, but it’s not very likely.”

Later that same day Chris and Alex meet Paul and his wife, Caroline, for dinner Paul and Chris begin to talk and Paul’s approach seems quite straightforward Paul suggests that since Chris finds work at Pines quiet, he should consider a larger firm, such as Walker Paul gives Chris his business card again, which describes him as “Executive Vice President Recruitment”, but the earlier card had said “Senior Design Consultant” Paul describes that Walker is an expanding organization looking for new talent As Chris leaves, Paul pulls him aside and says that he is interested in him, and is prepared to offer him an attractive package, and he wouldn’t have to move to Delaware

Continued… Chris considers the offer Paul suggests that Chris starts working with Walker part-time to see how he likes it He says that Pines would never have to know about it Chris says “I’ll think about it” but has already decided that the offer is too shady

Thursday, July 20 Joe calls Chris into his office and says, “Hear you had an offer from Walker. You want to work for them?” “Hell no” says Chris Joe says that Chris has a great future with Pines and if he is loyal to Pines Joe will reward him They shake hands and Chris feels like his relationship with Joe has changed forever.

Loyalty By the code of ethics, an employee must be loyal to his employer It would be unethical for Chris to work part-time for Walker while he is still employed at Pines It would also be unethical for Chris to keep this information from Joe and Pines
