Multi-Sensory Learning Memory Tricks

Y our Preferred Learning Style Visual Auditory Kinetic Write words or math problems in the air as you say it outloud Use flash cards - colored cards- and lay on the table and move around in catergories as you need. Categories such as, “need to review” or “don’t know.”

Your Preferred Learning Style USING YOUR WHOLE BRAIN Using your whole brain means utilizing both the right and left hemispheres of your brain. The two sides function differently, and learning how to incorporate both can create new options for understanding and maximizing learning ability. Left SideRight Side Logical Linear Mathematical Language Analytical Reasoning Conscious mind Intuitive Nonlinear Visual Spatial Creative Subconscious mind

Your Preferred Learning Style USING YOUR WHOLE BRAIN

How To Make Your Memory Work Better The true art of memory is the art of attention -Samuel Johnson, author Party Game!

How To Make Your Memory Work Better Memory is like a computer. It is your job to get information from short-term memory (programmed) into long-term memory (stored.) This process is called meaningful repetition. Memory is like a chain-link fence. Each link (thought) connects to another and creates a body of knowledge. This knowledge is stored in the long-term memory, which can hold infinite amounts of information.

How To Make Your Memory Work Better Tips: 1. Study in groups or with a study partner: As you explain (recite) the material to each other you begin to develop a deeper understanding of it. Recitation is important and helps you to truly know your subject. 2. Personalize the material: This means putting our own personal stamp on information by effectively using study techniques that work for you.

How To Make Your Memory Work Better What the Experts Do: Use the principle of Association: We remember things with which we have an association. A song comes on the radio and you instantly remember the lyrics because it is associated with an emotion/memory. Emotions and feelings are directly connected to memory. Associations are memory links. Connect the old knowledge to the new.

How To Make Your Memory Work Better What the Experts Do: Use the principle of Background Building: A subject that is familiar is easier to study than one that isn’t. If the subject is unfamiliar to you, brush up on the basics. Begin with the glossary in the back. Look up unfamiliar words and write down the definitions. Build your knowledge base.

How To Make Your Memory Work Better What the Experts Do: Use the principle of Divided Practice: It is easier to learn and remember when your study time is divided into short blocks rather than long ones.

How To Make Your Memory Work Better What the Experts Do: Use the principle of Selection: Make a good choice about what parts of your material to study is important. You can’t possibly memorize every word that you read. Begin by identifying the main ideas of each paragraph or sections of a chapter. Think of the main idea as an umbrella. As you practice the principle of selection, you will be deciding which pieces of information need to be stored in your long- term memory.

How To Make Your Memory Work Better What the Experts Do: Use the principle of Visualization: Using pictures and symbols to remember information makes you use the spatial or right hand side of your brain. Visualization is one of the most powerful tools of memory. Creativity plays an important part in visual learning.
