About Makia Malo World Renowned Storyteller/Writer Hansen’s disease (formally known as Leprosy) –Blind –No feelings from his hands (cannot read Braille) Sent to Kalaupapa at the age of 12 Enrolled at UH at 37, graduated with bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian Studies and certificate in teaching

Morse Code

hello world … eat me

Current Situation JAWS – Screen reader for Windows MORSE CODE INPUT INTERFACE (DARCI TOO) –Serial interface, drivers needed, not user friendly, not portable, external powered, difficult to use, not flexible

Our Solution Retain JAWS as a screen reading device Morse Code Input Device –He already knows it –Fast and sub-cognitive, much like typing USB connectivity –No drivers/software necessary 1, 2, or 3 different input signals for flexible input Visual and Audio feedback Speech Recognition possibility to help supplement Morse code input device

Potential Problems Interfacing BasicX controller with USB controller Reliability of switches Interfacing with JAWS Power

What we expect to learn Problem Analysis Hardware design Programming of microcontroller in Basic Testing Time Management

Deliverable goals STAMPS processor based module –NetMedia BasicX microcontroller –Cheap –Easy 1/2/3 Input signals –1 signal, time dependent for each dot or dash –2 signals, time dependent for each character –3 signals, not time dependent Visual and audio feedback with each input USB interface Portable and reliable

Brief Timeline Sept 19th – Meet with Makia and Sandy 4 th week Sept – Collaborate with ATRC to setup JAWS with Morse inputs 1 st week Oct – Start basic x programming of BasicX chip 1 st week Oct – Start hardware design (switches) 1 st week Nov – Finish programming, implement to hardware, test
