OV-chipcard UITP Urban Transport Benchmark Group, Visit, January 2006 Presentation and demonstration of the OV-chipcard system at the RET.

OV-chipcard The OV-chipcard system The new way of travelling in Dutch public transport starts in the RET metro system.

OV-chipcard Program Presentation Introduction The OV-chipcard Travelling with the OV-chipcard OV-chipcard assortment & travelling products Current status of the introduction Demonstration

OV-chipcard Introduction June 2003: Development of hardware, software, processes and communication Testprogrammes August - November 2005: Stations closed December 2005: Introduction of the OV-chipcard in the Rotterdam area: RET: metro Connexxion: busses in areas around Rotterdam Medio 2006: RET: busses and trams NS: train, starting in Rotterdam area

OV-chipcard Important reason for the introduction of the OV- chipcard system: public safety in transport Improving the security in Rotterdam is one of the priorities of the local government. A closed metro system is the base for security management in public transport. Gates can only be opened using a valid ticket. Less incidents caused by fare-evaders.

OV-chipcard Advantages of the OV-chipcard for the PTO RET Less fare-evaders. Improve the security; less incidents and vandalism. Management information. Easier for customers to use public transport. National Card integration in combination with tariff differentiation.

OV-chipcard The OV-chipcard The OV-chipcard is a plastic smart card with a chip inside. The OV-chipcard can be loaded with euro’s and travelling products. The chip and antenna inside the card are not visible. The chip works contactless; passengers can keep the card in their wallet or coat while checking in and out.

OV-chipcard Advantages of the OV-chipcard for customers Easy –card is contactless and can be used in all the Dutch public transport modes –not necessary to think about ‘zones’ and ‘strippen’ (= difficult part of current tariff system) Fair –difficult to travel without having paid because of the gates (closed system) –fare is calculated exactly; tariff per distance travelled Smart –OV-chipcard calculates the exact fare –PTO has information which makes it easier to respond to customer demand Safe –difficult to travel without having paid because of the closed system –less fare-evaders, means less incidents and vandalism Quick –check-in and check-out is faster using an OV-chipcard –autoload is possible

OV-chipcard Travelling with the OV-chipcard 1. Load Euro’s: for ‘specify while travelling’ principle. Travelling products: pre-paid products. 2. Check-in Starting a journey you have to do a check-in using the card reader. Signals confirm a right check-in. 3. Check-out At the end of a trip you have to do a check-out. Signals confirm a right check-out.

OV-chipcard OV-chipcards & travelling products (1) Personalised OV-chipcard –personalised because name, date of birth and photo are printed –can be loaded with euro’s and all travelling products (incl. passes) –easy to block when lost or stolen –available via an application form; several days delivery time

OV-chipcard OV-chipcards & travelling products (2) Anonymous OV-chipcard –can be used by more than one passenger; but not at the same moment –can be loaded with euro’s and non-personalised products –can be used directly after sales Disposable OV-chipcard –non-personalised, non-plastic card –validity of the card is equal to validity of the product on the card –not reloadable –can be used directly after sales

OV-chipcard OV-chipcards & travelling products (3) Euro’s (easy trip) –available on all reloadable cards –pay per distance travelled –loading is possible at ‘ticket vending machines’, ‘add value machines’ and RET sales offices at metrostations –autoload is available on the personalised card Travelling products –season passes available on personalised OV-chipcards –for the time being the current zone-system is used for the season passes –daypasses and single ride tickets are available in TVM, AVM and sales offices

OV-chipcard Entering the stations OV-chipcard –card readers (separate or integrated in a gate) Paper ticket which has to be stamped –yellow top box Paper ticket which is already validated –blue bottom box
