What is imagery? The most common type of imagery is forming mental images or pictures as something is described in literature. Imagery can be used through other senses too, such as sound, touch, smell, taste, and movement, although not as commonly used. Imagery is NOT physical. Everything you feel, hear or see is done mentally.

Why should you care? Imagery is important because it makes details easier to understand. Without it the author might not be able to convey the scene they are describing to the reader. It is also a very important writing skill. Using imagery in your writing makes it easier for the reader and keeps them interested.

Forms of imagery Simile – Simile is the comparison of two objects using “like” or “as”. Example: I’m as cool as a cucumber. Metaphor – Metaphor is a direct comparison of two objects. Example: Her eyes are sparkling pools of blue. Similes and metaphors are forms of imagery because you get a picture in your head as you read them.

Imagery in Fahrenheit 451 Imagery in Fahrenheit 451: – “It was a pleasure to burn. It was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see the things blackened and changed. With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world, the blood pounded in his head, and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning to bring down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history.” (Page 3) This paragraph shows imagery through metaphors. Bradbury compares “the brass nozzle” to a “great python”. He also compares his hands holding the hose of kerosene to “the hands of some amazing conductor playing the symphonies of blazing and burning to bring down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history”. – “They walked in the warm-cool blowing night on the silvered pavement and there was the faintest breath of fresh apricots and strawberries in the air, and he looked around and realized this was quite impossible, so late in the year.” (Page 6-7) This quote shows how imagery is used in other senses too, in this case, smell.

Imagery in The Giver and The Outsiders, The Giver: – “Now, seeing the new child and its expression, he was reminded that the light eyes were not only a rarity but gave one who had them a certain look- what was it? Depth he decided; as if one were looking into the clear water of the river, down to the bottom, where things might lurk which hadn’t been discovered yet.” (Page 21) The Outsiders: – Ponyboy recites “Nothing Stays Gold” by Robert Frost to Johnny at the church. Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.

The needful bits and curbs to headstrong weeds, Which for this nineteen years we have let slip; Even like an o'ergrown lion in a cave, That goes not out to prey.” The duke uses simile to describe their laws Pop Culture: – I found that Imagery is used a lot as a form of advertisement, mainly for foods or fragrances. “…award-winning Sweet Pea, a fruity floral scent that evokes the intoxicating, floral-infused breezes of the Mediterranean.” – Sweet Pea Body Lotion, Bath and Bodyworks Odwalla Juices
