Syllabus

CSCI 640 Operating Systems Instructor: Dr. Bob Roggio Prerequisites:CSCI 349, CSCI 311. Web Page: Textbook: Operating System Concepts 7th Edition, Silberschatz, Galvin, and Gagne, John Wiley, ISBN Course Description: Continuation of Operating Systems principles and features with emphasis on advanced topics normally not covered in an undergraduate course. Such topics will include protection, security, distributed operating systems, distributed files, and other such topics.

Syllabus (continued) Course Schedule:Coverage of material should include the textbook starting with Chapter 10. Anticipated Grading: Exam 1 25% Exam 2 25% Homework 25% Papers / Projects 25% There will be no set schedule for exams. When we arrive at an appropriate exam place, I will schedule the exam. But I can be quite flexible here. One day is as good as another.

Syllabus - Homework Homework: Homework assignments will be posted on my webpage along with anticipated due dates. It is anticipated that there will be a number of specific homework assignments. Most of these will likely come from the end of the chapters we study, but perhaps not all. I will require a few papers and/or small projects appropriate to graduate work.

Syllabus – Lecture Presentations Lecture Presentations: Will all be done using power point slides. While these are provided by the book publisher, I will be supplementing them very significantly.. You may download the publisher’s slides by accessing their web page. I will also post my ‘take’ on these slides (from which the live lectures will occur) on my webpage.

Syllabus – More More: If you have any questions along the way, please do not hesitate to me at any time. I am very attentive to my and will respond right away. Questions might arise from my presentation of the materials, homework, programming assignments, exams, or other items. This is a super course and an absolutely essential course for computer science students and practitioners. Work hard and have fun. We’ve lots to learn! End syllabus.

Detailed Power Point Slides

Note: The author has supplied a first cut at power point slides for students and instructors alike. As is my want, I will modify them considerably to reflect items that I feel need more emphasis or clarification and in some cases, elimination. My slides tend to be very ‘busy’ and contain considerable detail. I like to make them self-contained. –While they are likely not good for formal presentations to professional groups, they tend to serve the purpose of instruction reasonably well. –I will talk from them as you will see from my presentations.

Assignment 0 Please see web page and follow the instructions for Assignment 0. This will also allow you to access my web page and gain some familiarity with it.

My Web Page and its Contents

My Web Page All my power point slides will be copied to this web page for your offline reference, if you wish. All homework assignments, syllabus, helpful links, etc. will all be found on this web site. Please avail yourselves of it. Reading you should undertake – unless directed otherwise – comes directly from the textbook. Be certain to read all summaries, self-check exercises, etc. These are extremely important.
