Demonstration with Inxight Eureka Chaonan Geng ICS280 Spring 2001

Eureka Overview Technology: table lens based on the principle of focus+context Allows users to do (Features) –view an entire dataset on one screen –zoom in to focus on individual record values –easily navigate large datasets –public a table lens on the web –click columns to sort by them –group records by column variables –spotlight individual records to track them when you sort –filter out data subsets

Outline of demonstration Focusing on Data Managing data displaying Finding data pattern (sorting, grouping, spotlighting, filtering) A few examples ( the number depends on our time)

Focusing on Data “Tools” menu and setting preferences Focus a cell focus multiple cells focus a row focus multiple rows value-attached focus vs. grid-attached focus change the focus type (click the cell of row number column) focus columns (right-click the column heading, then “focus”) change the focus size (resize handles) move a focus (click new rows, use focus control bar) remove a focus (remove all, remove one row or column)

Managing the data display Data mapping options –mapping mode non-uniform mode if there are more records than vertical pixels on the screen, records are combined non-uniformly-- some rows may represent more records than other rows. uniform without scroll mode records are combined such that the # of records represented in each row is the same throughout the table lens. uniform with scroll mode if there are more records than there are vertical pixels on the screen, records are not combined. –combining option (min displays the lowest of the combined values) min, max, average, min and max, min and median

Managing the data display showing or hiding data –hiding columns & unhiding columns –resizing focused columns ( click on focus and drag the left or right border in the column heading) –expanding rows or columns (using span controls) only used in non-uniform mapping mode (rows) span controls in column can used in any mode clear a single span control (clicking on it) clear all the span controls (view menu, toolbar)

Managing the data display changing column data display –change column name (click column heading, column properties) –change column data type –change date format –change number format –group dates into categories –group numbers into categories –change category color and sort order settings

Finding data pattern Sorting data restoring the original row order (view menu or toolbar) moving columns grouping columns (one or more) spotlighting data (next) filtering data (next)

Finding data pattern Spotlighting data –spotlight a cell –spotlight a selection –spotlight a group –spotlight column values spotlight a range of dates spotlight a range of numeric values spotlight a category –clear a spotlight

Finding data pattern Filtering –filtering a selection –filtering a group –filtering column values (click column heading) filter a range of dates filter a range of numeric values filter a category
