MICE Installation Issues – MICE CM23 at ICST, Harbin, China Page 2Steve Virostek - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab - January 13, 2009 Topic Summary Packaging and delivery to RAL Moving of modules into MICE hall Assembly work in MICE hall Installation interfaces End flanges and seals Base mounting Other connections Utility requirements Instrumentation

MICE Installation Issues – MICE CM23 at ICST, Harbin, China Page 3Steve Virostek - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab - January 13, 2009 Progress Update Shipping skid for RFCC module developed –Module axis is vertical during shipping –Skid provides for rotation to horizontal in MICE hall RAL developing spectrometer solenoid lift beam –Four lifting points are included on the magnets –Load testing and certification is required Two module bellows spools received at RAL –Bellows assemblies purchased from Hyspan –Spools connect spectrometer solenoid to AFC module –Apparent tolerance error being discussed w/vendor

MICE Installation Issues – MICE CM23 at ICST, Harbin, China Page 4Steve Virostek - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab - January 13, 2009 Progress Update (cont’d) Still need a helium-to-vacuum window design –Window separates vacuum space from tracker volume in spectrometer solenoid bore –Preliminary plan is to use AFC style window –Good opportunity to add mounting holes now Several instrumentation readouts purchased –Thermocouple and helium level readouts for the spectrometer solenoid have been received by LBNL –Similar readouts will be needed for RFCC module –Most instrumentation only needed during initial tests

MICE Installation Issues – MICE CM23 at ICST, Harbin, China Page 5Steve Virostek - Lawrence Berkeley National Lab - January 13, 2009 Shipping Logistics All modules to be forklifted on/off truck All magnet coils are shipped warm RFCC cavities, couplers, coolers & pumps removed Coupling coil integral with vacuum vessel RFCC axis vertical during shipping Concerns about shipping loads on coupling coil Special shipping skid has been developed Cavities, couplers packaged to prevent damage RF, Be windows left in place w/appropriate protection Vac vessel, cavities and couplers backfilled with N 2
