Unit 1.4 Earthquakes. Where do earthquakes Occur? Earthquakes can occur near the Earth’s surface or far below the surface. Most earthquakes occur at plate.
Crust Deformation: Forces, Faults and Folds. Deformation The bending, tilting, and breaking of the earth’s crust major cause of deformation = plate tectonics.

Stress-the amount of force per unit area on a given material Deformation-the process by which the shape of a rock changes because of stress Compression-when.
3 Types of Stress 1. Tension: stress that pulls rock apart Rock gets thinner in the middle 2. Compression: stress that pushes rock together 3. Shearing:

Earthquakes The shaking of the Earth’s crust caused by a release of energy. The major cause is the build up of stress between two lithospheric plates.

Presentation transcript:

Types of Stress

Stress A stress is a force that acts on rocks to change its shape or volume The force adds energy to the rock until it breaks or changes shape

Causes Unequal heating and cooling in the Earth’s mantle Results in Earthquakes

Shearing Stress that pushes rock mass in two opposite directions. Crust slides side by side Evidence of this?

Tension Pulls on the crust Stretching the rock so it is thinner in the middle Crust pulls apart

Compression Squeezes rock until it folds or breaks Crust pushes together

Rock has two options when these stresses are present 1. Rock Folds 2. Rock breaks
