Chapter 2: Interdisciplinary Research in Health Problems 1.Film: Aids and Circumcision The evidence for the relationship between aids and circumcision was multi and interdisciplinary. The practice of circumcision is cultural and religious. The change in practice requires a multi and interdisciplinary effort.

Film: Eduardo the Healer –Update: Eduardo recently died, after this film he became quite famous and opened a clinic which saw patience up until he died. He became internationally recognized as a shaman/healer and went to international conferences on shamanism. –Even traditional healers are multi disciplinary practitioners. Magic Psychology Anthropology Etc.

Eco Terms: Ecology - The study of ecosystems –Interrelationships between the environment and the populations that inhabit that environment Population – a group of individuals of the same species that live in the same environmental area Species – a population of reproductively isolated individuals – gene flow within a species, no gene flow between species. Niche – a way of making a living within an environment.

Types of Population Interactions Niche competition: when two or more populations are utilizing the same set of resources within an environment –Populations tend to avoid competition by diverging into other niches or sub niches Predators and Pray – Diseases? –Innate fears –Disgust

Parasitism – Reason for Sexual Reproduction (Red Queen) Table 2.1 – Be familiar with the list of infectious and parasitic organisms. –Are Prions an organism? –Kuru, cultural component Epidemiology – the study of spatial and temporal distribution of disease –Hep A in London

Study Types of Disease in Table 2.2 Morbidity vs Mortality Doing fieldwork (next week in the combined class with ANTH 511 –Participant Observation –Ethics –Informed Consent –Etc.

Political Economy –World System –Marxist Ideology Ecological and Biocultural –Books prospective –Health is a by-product of human environmental interactions Environment includes other species Political Ecology –Environment and social/political history
