Testbeams for Tracking Prototypes Two categories: TPC/Gaseous tracking – please chime in Solid-state (silicon  strip) tracking – will present some issues to be explored with testbeams

Primary issues: Power cycling Signal/noise; efficiency and occupancy Point resolution Timing Solid-State Tracking Issues

Power Cycling Beams are on for 1 msec five times a second  should be able to achieve power reduction of ~5x10 -3 if power can be switched on/off in ~100  sec. Should be able to explore/confirm this on test bench  not a test beam issue.

Timing Timing resolution should be very roughly  shape /SNR Electronics with ~1  sec shaping should achieve timing resolution of very roughly 100 nsec – can distinguish individual beam pulses BUT: Should also be able to explore/confirm this on test bench  also not a test beam issue.

Pulse Development Simulation Long Shaping-Time Limit: strip sees signal if and only if hole is col- lected onto strip (no electrostatic coupling to neighboring strips) Incorporates: Landau statistics (SSSimSide; Gerry Lynch LBNL), detector geometry and orientation, diffusion and space-charge, Lorentz angle, electronic response

Expected performance 167cm ladder, 300  m thick sensors, normal incidence

RMS Gaussian Fit RMS Gaussian Fit Readout Threshold (Fraction of min-i) Trigger Threshold 167cm Ladder 132cm Ladder Resolution With and Without Second (Readout) Threshold

Non-normal incidence

For  strip tracking, resolution studies point towards stiff (10-50 GeV) beam with 1-cm 2 beam profile and slow spill with ~10 4 Hz rate during beam spill Lower energy (~5 GeV) beam in high field (~5T) might be useful – would need to explore. Comments on gaseous tracking TB needs/points of cooperation? Discussion
