Tulane University - Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS) DSR EXPECTATIONS Objectives –Know categories of DSRs –Know responsibilities to include annual and /or quarterly expectations as per category –Know how to coordinate safety training to staff –Know how to document training and other responsibilities –Know how to access the OEHS website

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT Tulane University has adopted the EHS Compliance Management System which includes the following: –EHS Policy Committee –EHS Operations Committee –Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS) –Committees (such as Radiation Safety, Institutional Biosafety, Emergency Operations, Control of Occupational Exposure) –DSRs Each “unit” head (such as department, section, etc.) is asked to appoint at least one DSR. DSR acts as liaison between OEHS & unit. Tulane University - Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS)

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT Multiple DSRs should be considered per unit based upon –Categories If a department has both offices and laboratories. –Campus –Work areas If a department has work areas at multiple campuses or locations, then several DSRs should be selected. CATEGORIES OF DSRs LABS FACILITIES OFFICES Categories are based upon hazardous material usage and operations.

Tulane University - Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS) DSR EXPECTATIONS QUARTERLY Attend scheduled meetings with OEHS on selected safety topics Have unit personnel review quarterly safety topics, as required (either by in-service training session, handouts, meetings with unit personnel, online, etc.) Send documentation to OEHS that topic was reviewed either by quizzes, training record forms, or completion of online training modules.

Tulane University - Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS) DSR EXPECTATIONS QUARTERLY Coordinate quarterly inspections for your unit –As required by the Louisiana State Worker’s Compensation law –Supervisors are ultimately responsible for inspections. –It is recommended that the appropriate health & safety inspection forms be used. –For copies of the available inspection forms, go to: –You may also create your own form noting hazards in your area & how/when items will be corrected.

DSR EXPECTATIONS –Send completed forms to L. Mayer – OEHS via campus mail (TW16), fax ( ), hand deliver to one of the OEHS offices, or bring to DSR –Receipt of the reports is entered into the DSR database. –A copy of each report is then given to the appropriate OEHS staff member responsible for the area for their review and file. –Keep a copy for your files. DSR EXPECTATIONS Address unsafe conditions or practices within your unit Report your concern or action to your supervisor, as needed. Contact OEHS – (TUHSC), (Uptown), or extension 6653 (TNPRC) with questions or concerns involving unsafe conditions or practices.

DSR EXPECTATIONS If there are identified concerns, OEHS will respond by –Contacting the appropriate departmental head or supervisor –Surveying the work area –Taking pictures, as needed –Initiating and distributing a written report –Requesting follow up Tulane University - Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS)

DSR EXPECTATIONS Act as a liaison between unit and OEHS –OEHS staff will contact the DSR for Complaints Addressing issues or concerns When surveying or inspecting a work area Questions or information involving health and safety in your work area Tulane University - Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS)

DSR EXPECTATIONS Emergency Response –Emergencies and Drills Assist with evacuation of your work area Account for evacuation of personnel in assembly area Tulane University - Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS)

DSR EXPECTATIONS (LABS & FACILITIES) Annually Ensure access to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) –Obtain MSDSs from the OEHS website or contact OEHS As applicable, ensure unit submits to OEHS copies of completed safety paperwork: –For OEHS lab safety paperwork, go to:

Tulane University - Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS) DEPARTMENTAL SAFETY REPRESENTATIVES Ensure unit members receive the required health & safety training using material provided by OEHS or by approved others Training methods: –Use training materials distributed at DSR meetings DSR provides classroom training. DSR discusses at a unit meeting with personnel.
