ALT Learning Technologist of the year : Team award 2009 European foundation for quality in e-learning Unique Award winner DUCKLING E-book readers Beyond Distance Research Alliance University of Leicester

The e-book reader pilot 28 Sony PRS-505 e-book readers Pre-loaded with course materials and podcasts Given to 17 Education and 11 Occupational Psychology students

Course material conversion

Functionalities of e-book readers that enable effective reading FindingsKey points Portability: small, compact size and light weight Readability under different conditions, e.g. in sunlight Access to all course material from a stand-alone device with no need for an internet connection Continue reading and Bookmark functions Long battery life Capacity to store many readings User-friendly interface Enhanced curriculum flexibility to meet mobility demands Students used their e-book readers in different places (at home, in the office, in public places and on the move) to access all essential course readings. Better use of time Students found it easy to take the e-book reader anywhere and read whenever an opportunity arises. They filled in the gaps during the day for study purposes. New study strategies Some students changed their strategies for reading, keeping notes and approaching assignments. Some students opted for the e-book reader for reading while on the move, the iPhone for a quick check, and printed material for note-taking and highlighting. Cost savings for students As a direct result of the availability of the e-book reader, some students were less dependent on printed material and more selective when printing materials out. Benefits to learners

Cost savings for institutions Cost of introducing e-book readers in 2009: Device SONY-PRS-505 (discontinued), replaced by SONY PRS-300 £150 DeliverySecure DHL delivery£30 per parcel overseas Materials Formatting and converting module materials into ePub Averaged at £60 per device Total cost per student £240
