Data Use: How to Write a PLACE Report Priorities for Local AIDS Control Efforts

Presentation Summary Overview: What is a PLACE report? Creating the report: ∆ preparing the data ∆ tables ∆ figures (pie and bar charts and maps) ∆ key indicators ∆ preliminary recommendations for priority prevention areas Next steps: Sharing results.

Overview: What is a PLACE Report?

PLACE Report: Part of Step 5 in the PLACE Method 1 identified as area for PLACE study 2-4 Conduct PLACE assessment in 2 Identify venues where people meet new partners 3 Visit, characterize, map all venues 4 Describe the characteristics of people socializing at venues 5 Use results to improve programs

Priorities for Local AIDS Control Efforts in : Findings from PLACE and Recommended Plan for Action What Is a PLACE Report? ∆Provides a summary of all information collected during a PLACE assessment ∆Presented at the feedback meeting ∆Contains preliminary recommendations for where to target future prevention programs

Priorities for Local AIDS Control Efforts in : Findings from PLACE and Recommended Plan for Action A PLACE Report Includes… ∆Executive Summary ∆Summary of Important Indicators ∆Background and Objectives of PLACE in ∆Description of How Was Selected ∆Description of PLACE Assessment Findings

The Report: Part of Step 5 in the PLACE Method 1 identified as area for PLACE study 2-4 Conduct PLACE assessment in 2 Identify venues where people meet new partners 3 Visit, characterize, map all venues 4 Describe the characteristics of people socializing at venues 5 Use results to improve programs

How to Create a PLACE Report

Step 2: Identify venues where people meet new partners Community Informant Questionnaire (Form A) Venue and Event Report (Form B) Step 3: Visit, characterize, map all venues Venue Verification Form (Form C) Step 4: Find out if there are many new sexual partnerships formed at venues Questionnaire for Individuals Socializing at Venues (Form D) Preparing the PLACE Report Data

“Read” data into EpiInfo Clean data ∆During data entry, a “check program” should be used to prevent invalid data. ∆If a “check program” was not used, invalid responses should be changed to “missing data.”

After data are cleaned and ready …

Preparing the PLACE Report Data Perform simple frequency tabulations for each variable: ∆Community Informant Questionnaire (Form A) ∆Venue Verification Form (Form C)

Preparing the PLACE Report Data Perform tabulations by gender: Questionnaire for Individuals Socializing at Venues (Form D) Men n=586 Women n=303 Patron Ever Attracted a New Partner at Venue (D30) Yes No Missing value 4 12

Preparing the PLACE Report Data ∆Create partnership level variable ∆Perform tabulations by partnership level LOW No Sex or 1 Non-new Partner in Past Year MODERATE HIGH Any New/Multiple Partners Past 12 Months Past 4 Weeks Any New/ Multiple Partners

Now you’re ready to enter your data into the PLACE report!

Creating a PLACE Report ∆Guidelines are available to use when creating the report for. ∆Simply insert information about PLACE in and the results from data collected in into the provided template: –text, –table shells, and –clickable figures. ∆Include preliminary recommendations for priority intervention sites based on findings.

Report Template In Microsoft Word Format Priorities for Local AIDS Control Efforts in : Findings from PLACE and Recommended Plan for Action

Creating a PLACE Report Guidelines in the report template include: ∆Brackets. Suggestions are written inside the brackets. ∆Blanks ___________________. Fill in the blanks with the information for your district. ∆Text. Draft text is provided and can be adapted. ∆Graphs and figures. Click on these graphs or figures and edit the data. ∆After each table, briefly summarize the presented findings and comment on the significance of results.

Creating PLACE Report Tables Tables include: ∆basic frequencies of every questionnaire variable, sometimes broken down by gender or HIV risk group; and ∆summary indicator tables of selected important indicators.

Condom Use Interviews with Individuals Socializing at venues Priority Prevention Area Name, PLACE Assessment, Men n=# Women n=# Ever Used a Condom (D48) Yes No Missing value Total Condom Used During Most Recent Sex (D48) Yes No Never used a condom Missing value Total Creating PLACE Report Tables % % % %

Creating PLACE Report Graphics ∆The template includes clickable pie charts: Figure 3: Type of Venue Reported (n=% of venues) “Click” to insert data from your

Creating PLACE Report Graphics The template also includes clickable bar charts: Click to insert data from your Figure 3: Type of Venue Reported (n=% of venues)

PLACE Report Graphics: Maps

Describing Key Indicators for the PLACE Report ∆Local PLACE teams identify which key indicators should be used and how priority venues for interventions will be identified. ∆Key indicators can include: % of patrons aged % of patrons who are unemployed % of patrons who are students % of patrons who visit venue daily % of patrons who have injected drugs in past month % of patrons ever tested for HIV. ∆Condom availability at venues should always be included.

PLACE Report Preliminary Recommendations: Priority Venues ∆Criteria for selecting priority venues to receive an intervention will depend on the local epidemic and the amount of resources available to field an intervention response. ∆Priority sites should be those where populations key to the transmission of HIV/AIDS in interact.

PLACE Report Preliminary Recommendations: Priority Venues Criteria that have been used to identify priority venues include: ∆ popular venues ∆ large venues ∆ specific key population venues e.g. sex workers, injecting drug users, men who have sex with men, youth ∆ overlap venues e.g. frequented by two or more key populations ∆ high partnership venues

Next Steps: Sharing Results

Sharing Results: ∆Present the PLACE report at local and regional feedback workshops. ∆At feedback workshops, the list of recommendations and action plans are finalized.

Sharing Results: ∆ Additional analysis may be important: behavior among certain age groups; behavior among key populations; or behavior at venues with certain characteristics. ∆ Conduct a data use workshop with intervention groups.
