Henry Fielding

His conception of the novel He thought that the novel should depict humble, contemporary life as the classical epic had done the more primitive world, so he called his novel “a comic epic in prose” 滑稽的散文 / 无韵史诗.

This conception led him to introduce a burlesque element into the style. And he endowed the novel with a notion of form.

His novels 1.well-constructed to an inevitable ending, the third person narration ( omniscient narrator) (c.f. Richardson’s epistolary form; Defoe’s picaresque form) 2.lively and dramatic dialogues and other theatrical devices (suspense, coincidence etc.) 3.his style: clear, supple, familiar, easy, vivid and vigorous.

Joseph Andrews Parson Adams A character simultaneously comic and sympathetic; heroic in strength and nobility and lovable in his unselfish kindness but his unsophistication making him the focus of the basic satiric theme
