Introduction to Youth Organizations

Overview of Today Orientation to the course Youth Development The Advisor: Roles and Responsibilities Overview of Career and Technical Student Organizations Overview of Ag Youth Organizations, 4-H, etc.

A Little About Me & My Experiences With Youth Organizations 4-H – about age 11 –Livestock judging –Raised livestock, chickens, cattle, horses FFA -- From age 14 –Livestock judging –Horses, Cattle Explorers -- Age 16 –Contests –Camping –Canoeing

I have 2 boys—4-H & Boy Scouts

In the Beginning I majored in Ag Ed mainly because of my farm experience and because of my mother’s background in education. I liked both ag and education – Both ag teachers were good people and had a positive influence on me. I once thought about becoming a coach When I went to college I had to declare a major so I said Ag Ed.

Continued… I once, during the 2 nd year, thought about changing majors. But the kind and gentle old advisor talked me into sticking with Ag Ed a little longer. At the time I had not taken a single ag ed course. I became active in FFA, B&B and some non ag clubs. Because I had started college when I was 17, I was able to graduate in three years by going in the summers and at the age of 20 and started teaching. So I became an FFA Advisor at the ag of 20…

FFA Experience as a Teacher Fairly successful –Students have won various awards at the state, regional and national level (Specialized in Soils, Livestock, and Parliamentary Procedure –Formed an FFA alumni chapter that is still going –Started horticulture program still going and has been improved greatly

Not Everyone Will Be An FFA Star

The End
