The Tale of Two Rap Styles from an Old Guy’s Perspective

Mr. C doesn’t listen to too much besides Disney songs these days but he does understand Rap and its style. East and West coast rap are strikingly similar to Romanticism and Realism. Think of West Coast Rap as Realism, and East Coast Rap as Romanticism. Here is an example:

East Coast Rap- Romantic  Rap originated in New York in the 1970’s and progressed into what we know as Hip Hop. It is dominated by aggressive beats and lyrical dexterity. The MC “spits” in a continuous free-flow delivery. The thematic content of East Coast Rap tends to focus on fantastic parties. East Coast MC’s use the latter in their personal style which often resembles that of 1920’s and 30’s mafia gangsters. Flashy suits, fedoras, and extravagant jewelry adorn the MC. Videos are bright, colorful, and focus on wealth and good times.

West Coast Rap- Realist  West Coast Rap emerged as a reaction to East Coast in the late 1980’s. West Coast Rap has strong funk and soul undertones. West Coast Rap is described as “gritty and real” dealing with the hardness of living in bad neighborhoods littered with violence. West Coast Rap also focuses on parties, but these are more realistic and less fantastic. A rapper from the West Coast is usually in baggy sports wear and less flashy than East Coast.

While both styles focus on social issues surrounding “life on the streets” and freedom of expression, there are differences that make each unique and distinguishable.

Then you have today’s version of Rap… which is neither Realistic nor Romantic in style… but often described as “worthless noise”
