Dairy Geographical Information System (DGIS) for Farmers Co-operative Milk Unions Information & Development Research, NDDB, Anand

Perspective 2010 The 3 tier co-operative dairy framework is in place. The challenge is to build on this foundation- both in quantitative & qualitative terms. To make this farmers’ co- operative institutions as self- reliant and thriving business enterprises which will be responsive to the economic & social expectations of its members.

Utility of GIS in Milk Unions Which are the village co-op societies that lie within 2 Km of either side of this road ? What is the total number of village co-op societies within 5 km of this Artificial Insemination (AI) Centre? What proportion of identified Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD) cases lies within 10 Km of a suspected village (as source of infection)?

Where can the Chilling Centres or Artificial Insemination Centres be set up? Which village co-op societies can go for Bulk Coolers?

Which are the milk procurement routes? Which are the village co-op societies on this route? What is the route wise milk procurement performance? What is the total route kilometres? What would be the milk procurement in litres/route KM, if we alter this route by adding/deleting some societies?

What is the estimated marketable surplus in the district? What is the village co-op societies combined milk procurement in this district ? Which are the societies where milk procurement is less than 50% of its estimated marketable surplus? What does the society look like?

Monitoring Competition : Milk procurement by the Milk Union & its competitor from the same district. Our Coverage Their Coverage Monitoring Competition MURSHIDABAD MILK UNION

Coverage by co-operative village societies: comparison over the years- “time series” maps. BHILWARA CO-OPERATIVE MILK UNION

 Refining the routes used for artificial breeding and herd testing services to ensure the distance covered to deliver those services is the most efficient in terms of time and money e.g. liquid semen processing and despatch  Using it for traceability, animal health monitoring and disease control and most importantly provide an “Early Warning System”. This can provide advanced notice such as impending livestock mortality/ spread of infectious disease by kind and class of animal, inadequate forage supply and decline in milk production.  Since GIS displays the data on the map, the epidemic situation could be understood & analyzed easily by the concerned department and thereafter they can mark the dangerous area and provide the result to village supervisors LIVESTOCK IMPROVEMENT

How are the individual Field Officers & Village Extension Supervisors performing as a whole in their operational area?

DGIS IS OF 2 PARTS: I.STAND-ALONE GIS APPLICATION AT THE MILK UNIONS: Unions use the given software for their own GIS analysis, independently in their best suited manner. II.INTERNET BASED MAP SERVER/ GIS APPLICATION AT ANAND: Access given to officers of Milk Union to see certain key data/maps using this application from any place (where internet facilities exists) which is uploaded to the map server through the stand-alone application.

Failure to identify and involve all users in using GIS Operational, management & and policy levels/support required for “teething” problem resolutions! Tendency to give up easily! Giving the GIS implementation responsibility to the EDP Department: There are distinct differences of the GIS from conventional EDP systems, the GIS implementation team is best led by “non-data processing types”! Let the users implement, as they know what they want! Failure to consider technology transfer: Training and support for on-going learning, for in-house staff is essential for a successful implementation at all the three levels. Nothing can replace the investment of hands on time with a GIS ! PITFALLS!

TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER (Easy to say…………..!)  Basic orientation in GIS  Continued briefings during the planning, design, and implementation phases  User training courses as needed in computing, general purpose software, databases & GIS  User training in specific application use, technical support service while GIS is in use  Data error/problem reporting and resolution procedures  User feedback on data accuracy and system performance FORM A GIS IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE! 1.In-Charge, P&I/Field Operation 2.Senior Officer, P&I/Field Operation 3.EDP/Computer Officer 4.NIN Officer, State Office,NDDB (Easiest to do…….!)

Thank You !
