Impacts of the Nursing Education Partnership Initiative (NEPI)

“… we need to rapidly bolster the global health workforce. Africa alone will require one million new health workers... Without such a dramatic increase in capacity, immunizations will not be administered;…curable diseases will remain untreated; and women will keep dying needlessly in childbirth” 2 Ban Ki-moon

An AIDS free generation is not possible… Without an adequate number of front line health workers, especially nurses and midwives, and Without strengthening the existing health workforce 3

Global Health Care Worker Crisis There is an estimated shortage of over 4 million midwives, nurses, doctors In Africa Over 57 countries, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, have a critical shortage 4

Global Health Care Worker Crisis 5 % of global work force % of global burden of disease South East Asia Africa Western Pacific Eastern Mediterranean Europe Americas

The Big 5: We need to strengthen the health workforce for HIV for an AIDS-free generation to improve… 6

The role of PEPFAR/NEPI in strengthening the health workforce in Malawi Improve the quantity and quality, and relevance of nurses and midwives to address HIV epidemic and other health threats. Identify, evaluate, and disseminate innovative models and practices that are generalizable for national scale-up of nursing and midwifery education. Build local and regional partnerships to transform environment of practice for nursing/midwifery and for sustainability of the achievements.

Achievements of NEPI in Malawi and other implementing countries Increased number of nurses/midwives competent in delivery of high quality services for HIV. Built capacity of nursing schools by enhancing faculty skills, curricula, and experiences for students. Strengthened nursing and midwifery institutions. Advanced role of nurses/midwives. Enhanced partnerships with national, regional and global nursing/midwifery programs and other networks.
