The man behind the legend Martin was born in the year 316, was the son of a Roman officer in Pannonia (now Hungary). On November 8, in Candes and was buried three days later in Tours.

According to legend … It was the year 338, one day in winter cold and rainy, Martin walked the lands of Amiens, in France where a poor, almost naked, asking for a handout to Martin. As I can not bring anything to give, Martin ripping his cloak in half, giving half to the beggar. According to the legend immediately opens the sky, the rain and the sun shines.

In Portugal... S. Martin is the saint of winter that signals the end of the cultures and the beginning of the feast of wine and chestnuts.
