Geographic Technologies Using technology to learn about places!

GPS Stands for Global Positioning System Definition: The system that accurately determines the precise position of something on the earth

What do we use GPS for? Airplanes and ships Finding the precise location of a vehicle or person through GPS on their phone or in their car Monitoring location (Where’s the bus? Where is your package in the mail?)

Remote Sensing The acquisition of data about Earth’s surface from a satellite orbiting the Earth or from another long-distance method.

Examples? Satellites that track storms and other weather patterns

GIS Stands for Global Information System Definition: A computer system that can capture, store, analyze and display geographic data

USES GIS is used to make pretty maps! Maps made with GIS can be more complex than hand- drawn maps – Layers Layers can be used to compare information and make connections between geographic ideas. – For example… where can we build roads that will be good for the population in the area?

So what can I do with geography? Aerial Photo Interpreter GIS programmer Property manager Air/water quality control manager GIS Database Management Public Utilities specialist Cartographer Hazardous waste planner Real Estate Agent/Broker/Appraiser Cartography Compiler Earth Scientist (like Talley and Carwin!)
