SEPTEMBER 16, 2014 Day 8 - AP Human Geography

Warm Up Day 16 -- 9/17/14 Take a few minutes, make sure everything is squared away on you Lost at Sea activity and put all of your names on it to turn in. Reflect: What are 3 things that you learned from doing this activity? Compare your measurements from the Atlas and from timeanddate.com. What did you notice/learn from this process? What conclusions can you make?

Agenda Map Quiz – South America Drill - Time Zones Distortion Types of Maps

Drill If it is 6 a.m. in New York, what time is it in the following cities:  Moscow, Russia  Tokyo, Japan  Bejing, China  Sydney, Australia  Dallas, TX  Anchorage, AK  Johannesburg, South Africa  Denver, CO  Honolulu, HA

Homework Complete Key Issue #2 by tomorrow Complete the Map Projection Activity Work on the Middle East Map, due Monday

What is GIS?

“GIS or a Geographic Information System is a computer system that stores, organizes, analyzes, and displays geographic data.”

Identify the feature above.

Identify this feature above.

Identify this above feature.

For Your Consideration Imagine that you are a researcher using GIS to determine information. What is a question that you might be able to answer using the technologies available?

Warm Up Day 17 -- 9/18/14 Explain to the best of your ability how GPS works. Also, what is GPS used for?

Agenda GPS Types of Maps

Homework Map Projections due Monday Key Issue #3 due Wednesday Middle East map due Monday

What is GPS? Click Here Click Here for Video #1 Click Here Click Here for Video #2

“GPS or a Global Positioning System determines the precise position of something on Earth through satellites, tracking stations, and receivers.”

What is remote sensing?

“Remote sensing is the acquisition of data about the Earth’s surface from a satellite orbiting the planet or from other long distance methods.”

What is a geographic model?

“A Geographic Model is a simplified way to explain complex patterns, make informed decisions and explain future behaviors.”

Map projections Project a round globe onto a flat surface Options? Stretch out some areas Cut out some areas Shrink some areas

Map projections WHEN CONSIDERING WHAT TO INCLUDE ON A MAP: Three properties to consider  Area (equal-area or equivalent)  Shape (conformal)  Distance (equidistant) How large an area? Purpose of the map Ulterior motives?

Cylindrical projections Shapes are preserved But not area! Mercator projection Deliberate distortion? –Cold War –Colonialism

Cylindrical projections: Gall- Peters Adjusting Mercator for a more “just” map Also preserves area Distorts shape differently

Conic projections Best for hemispheres or small regions Area and shape only slightly distorted

Planar projections Equidistant; good for navigation Only good for one hemisphere Distorts area, not shape

Other projections Based on more complicated math Interrupted, oval, combination Goode Robinson
