Jim joined UCLA in 2000 as associate vice chancellor, information technology. A decade of effort culminated this past year with the UCLA IT Strategic Plan: 2009 ˆ 2018, which underscores the importance of academic IT to UCLA‚s future competitiveness in research and education. Jim‚s new title responds to the plan and provides UCLA with strong leadership as the use of information technology within the academic enterprise rapidly expands. With this appointment, Jim and the Office of Information Technology will shift their focus on new responsibilities for IT programs and infrastructure in support of UCLA‚s academic mission. Jim will work in partnership with the vice chancellors for academic personnel, research and student affairs, vice provost for undergraduate education, Council of Deans, Academic Senate and Information Technology Planning Board (ITPB), and in collaboration with our academic units, he will have direct responsibilities for the Institute for Digital Research and Education (IDRE), the Institute for Informatics (I2), cross-cutting educational technology initiatives and academic IT application services.
