© 2005 Mobile VCE Overview of Introductory Presentation Vision & Approach Organisation Interworking Architecture Examples of Interworking

© 2005 Mobile VCE Interworking Broadcast & Mobile Networks Vision To allow broadcast and telecom network operators to co-operate providing enriched services anywhere, anytime in a cost effective and secure manner, facilitating new revenue streams Presumption Such players, coming from different industries, have a limited degree of mutual trust – implying integration is neither desirable nor probable. This determines the approach adopted: Approach Focus on interworking, not integration No fundamental change to existing networks Collaboration provides mutual benefit to both industries Provide enriched services and new revenues through interworking

© 2005 Mobile VCE Service & Revenue Requirements Examples Push/Pull Services (Resource Management) One to Many Communications (Group Management) Location Management (Mobility Management) Identity Federation (Security) Later presentations will provide further details

© 2005 Mobile VCE Push/Pull Services Requirements: Satisfy user requests for on-demand services (PULL) Provide conventional PUSH services efficiently Achievements Batch user requests to provide near-on-demand services (PULL) Infostation-based services (PUSH)

© 2005 Mobile VCE One to Many Communications Requirements: Multicast for wireless scalability & efficiency Diverse user and terminal requirements Optimal use of mobile/broadcast networks Achievements Context-aware Multicast Group Management Framework Enhancements to MBMS/DVB to support multicast

© 2005 Mobile VCE Location Management in Multiple Networks Requirement: Manage terminal location for idle (out of call) devices UMTS has LA tracking + paging, but DVB does not have solution Achievements Location Management proposal, based on mapping approach Performance Analysis and Signalling Cost Study DVB Horizontal handover proposal, based on mapping approach
