Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Department of Mathematics & Statistics Mission The mission of the undergraduate program in Mathematics and Statistics is to provide a broadly based program in undergraduate level mathematics and statistics which will prepare students either for graduate study in mathematics and statistics, or for mathematics-statistics related employment in academic, industrial, or governmental positions. The mission of the MS program in Mathematics is to provide a broadly based program in graduate level mathematics and statistics which will prepare students either for doctoral study in mathematics and statistics, or for mathematics-statistics related employment in academic, industrial or governmental positions. The mission of the PhD program in Applied Mathematics is to provide a high quality doctoral program in applied mathematics that will prepare students as research mathematicians for employment in either academic, industrial, or governmental positions.

Departmental Staffing Professors: 14 Associate Professors: 6 Assistant Professors: 4 Instructors: 9 Unclassified Professionals: 3 Classified Personnel: 3

TEACHING Teaching is done by faculty, GTA’s and sometimes, a few lecturers. We produce about 7% of WSU credit hours production (our budget is about 2.4% of WSU GU budget). Our contribution to the General Education Program: two Basic Skills courses, three Introductory level courses, five Further Studies courses and one Issues and Perspectives course. Our contribution to Other WSU Programs : the department is responsible for providing instruction for the calculus sequence and differential equations which are required for all engineering majors; Calculus I, Calculus II, CS 321, and CS 322 which are required for all computer science majors; and Stat 370 which is required for all education majors, nursing majors, and is accepted by the departments of sociology, psychology, and the Barton School of Business for their required statistics course. When requested the department offers Masters or PhD level courses for graduate students in engineering and sciences. The department offers courses in general education for teacher education, elementary and secondary teacher licensure programs.

MAJORS OFFERED Undergraduate Programs The department offers the following degrees: BA in Mathematics, BS in Mathematics, BS in Mathematics with emphasis in statistics, and BS in Mathematics with emphasis in computing. Graduate Programs The department offers the following graduate degrees: MS in Mathematics, PhD in Applied Mathematics with emphasis in partial differential equations, PhD in Applied Mathematics with emphasis in probability and statistics, and PhD in Applied Mathematics with emphasis in computational mathematics. Enrollment (2005 data). Undergraduate majors: 53. Graduate majors: 35. Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Department of Mathematics & Statistics

RESULTS Our undergraduate majors find success in a broad variety of careers: Business (28%), Engineering (17%), Research and Academia (15%), Computing (14%), Statistics (8%), Education (4%) and Other (14%). In the Other category are included areas such as law, medicine, art, self-employment, etc. MS graduates: PhD programs (30%), Education (40%), Industry and Other (30%). PhD graduates : Academia (65%), Industry (35%).

FACILITIES We have one classroom equipped with computers (32 seats) The department operates the Math Lab which offers free tutoring for students taking courses from Arithmetic through Calculus I and Elementary Statistics.

RESEARCH 21 faculty and our graduate students are involved in active research. Research in being done in a number of areas (traditional: Complex Analysis, PDE, Differential Geometry, Math Physics, etc.; applied: Tomography, Fluid Mechanics, Numerical Analysis, Survival Analysis, Financial Mathematics, Statistics, etc.). Faculty regularly apply for grant support to various agencies: NSF, Dept. of Defense, Dept. of Energy, Air Force, FAA, etc. We have a constantly working Lecture Series in the Mathematical Sciences (on Fridays) where accomplished mathematicians from all over the world are invited to speak.

RESEARCH Results: 2005 Faculty Publications: Books: 1 Journal Articles: 27 Book Reviews: 8 Published Conference Proceedings: 4 FY ’05 External Funding: $220,535
