NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION Technology Infusion Working Group Earth Science Data System Working Group on Technology Infusion Co-Chairs Karen Moe, NASA/ESTO, Rob Raskin, NASA/JPL,

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION 2 Purpose Deliver needed capabilities –Need to support science goals with faster & better models, near- real-time data, easier data fusion Prevent orphaned technologies –Some promising technologies don’t make it from prototype to operations

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION 3 Approach Define community processes to enhance technology infusion Define a capability vision to guide technology infusion efforts Capability Needs Technology Projections Technology Roadmaps Technology Development Technology Infusion Operational Systems Identified Gaps Solicitation Formulation Peer Review & Competitive Selection Capability Vision

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION 4 Progress Identified infusion barriers & strategies Identified key capabilities envisioned for future systems Infusion Strategies Technical Harden prototypes through testbeds Facilitate experimentation through Web- accessible services Promote open standards and open source solutions Informational & Sociological Focus on key emerging technologies Clarify return on investment for key technologies Participate in early deployments Promote partnering between scientists and technologists Financial & Policy Fund initial deployments and user support Develop ROI and funding models for new technology deployments Promote appropriate data rights policies CapabilityBenefit Assisted information selection Identify needed data quickly and easily Seamless data access Enable access to any data from anywhere Assisted knowledge building Provide research and operations assistance Interactive analysis environments Reduce research algorithm implementation from months to hours Super-scalable analysis portals Provide computing power and data storage on demand Interoperable information services Increase synergy within the ESE community through service chaining Integrated modeling frameworks Enable linked and ensemble models for improved predictive capability Responsive information logistics Ensure research priorities are met and enable new uses of ESE data Verifiable information quality Provide confidence in products and enable community data providers

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION 5 Additional Infusion Strategies: Management Theme Seek to closely coordinate DSWG and Federation activities; encourage active participation in WG Work with NASA management to focus resources on the maturation of technology (to ready new technology for infusion) Support technology fusion activities (similar technology funded to work together to leverage what they have in common and exploit unique contributions – e.g. web services) Promote openness of standards Implement standards that have been adopted or recommended and APIs Specify interoperability requirements (e.g. SOAP) in solicitations to enable infusion Provide funding to operational data distribution centers to adopt and deploy new technologies to improve usability; increase funding for technology maturation Recommendation Legend: Italics/ESIP Fed, Bold/NASA, Underline/both

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION 6 Additional Infusion Strategies: Education Theme Increase activities to support ESIP member education and foster cross communication –Opportunity Fair –Promote ‘shirt-sleeve’ workshop forums, e.g. offer an XML Workshop for scientists, so that SOAP is more understandable More active and more effective education and outreach to improve awareness of new technologies and what they can do –Develop an on-line bulletin board populated with a matrix identifying existing tools, features supported, developer comments/lessons learned (e.g. regarding data formats) –Establish an Ask Dr. ITScience service to match solutions to problems Establish conference and/or journal for Earth System Science Informatics Encourage significantly more IT education in Science degree programs (similar to how math is emphasized) Develop tailored technology project templates for new developers of value-added data products & services based on satellite data (for specific applications), e.g. –Checklist for things to consider when using remote sensing data –Streamlined installation and configuration procedures –Authoring systems

NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION 7 Next Steps Consolidate and disseminate technology infusion strategies –Incorporate results from yesterday’s breakout session –Help organizations and projects pursue successful strategies Complete and disseminate capability vision –Ensure strong linkage of capabilities to science goals –Identify key technologies for each capability theme –Create interactive video to share the vision
