This works! A national competition – a part of school’s technology education.

This works! – technology competition A national competition, where pupils plan and manufacture a future toy. Pupils keep diary, plan an advert and present their toys. The competition has two series A – to grades 1-3 and B – to grades 4-6. In year 2008 over pupils took part in the competition. This works! – technology competition is organised together with the Finnish National Board of Education and Technology Industries.

Technology education through several school subjects Emphasis on the aspects of innovation, esthetics, moral and sustainable development. Guides to the interdisciplinary and integrative teaching, where there’s room for pupils’ inventiveness and creativity Innovation process as a learning method. Requires the skills of (for example) mathematics, physics, mother tongue, art, crafts and music.

Starting kit The starting kit varies annually and it is revealed at the beginning of the competition.

Teams Duties are: - keeping the diary - planning and designing the advertisement - building - presentation Emphasis is on teamwork Groups of four – both boys and girls The group defines their roles and plans work distribution

Planning is a demanding phase Planning and exploration continues throughout working

Keeping diary All work phases are written down and documented

Making the advertisement The idea and operating principles of the machine need to be marketed

Building

Preselection at school Preselection judges choose one group and it’s toy to the regional competition

Technology fair All groups present their toys to other pupils and visitors in school’s technology fair.

Regional competition The skill of presenting group’s work is emphasized in the regional competition.

Finals in Dipoli An eventful day in Dipoli is rewarding in several ways
