Research Into Music Genre
The History Of Rap Music Roots Rap music is unique as the art form of rap music is comprised of three different parts content, delivery and flow and is a form of spoken poetry. Delivery meaning the breathing pattern and vocal presence. Flow meaning the rhythmic pattern they use. Content meaning there use of similes, metaphors etc…Rap music and hip-hop music are extremely closely linked. Rap music originated in Africa many years before hip-hop music were they delivered stories over drums rhythmically. This type of music then developed into other genres of music (Blues and Jazz). After this rapping seem to be a dead music genre but in the mid 20 th century the Caribbean music culture was influenced by American music and deejays started to tell stories over Jamaican beats and it was named rap therefore giving the word another meaning. On of the first rappers at the beginning of the rap and hip-hop period was DJ Kool Herc who started by just rapping at parties. Old School Rap The old school rap period was 1979 – 1984 during this stage simple raps were used and people rapped just for good times and did not focus on lyrical content. After this came the golden age.
Golden Age This stage was from the 80s to early 90s. During this stage is when many rappers started to use more complex lyrics one of the rappers noted for doing this is Rakim. He and other rappers paved the way for many rappers now by doing this as now many rappers use complex lyrics. One rapper who jumped to fame during this time was Dr.Dre. He became very popular while he was in the group NWA and then later on death row recordings were he recorded his best selling album The Chronic. Since then he has now stopped rapping and become a producer. Modern Day Rappers Since the rappers of the golden age rappers now have not changed very much. Rappers still use the same basic principles flow, delivery and content but rappers now use very much more complex metaphors and similes. A very famous rapper at the moment is Lil Wayne. The reason he is famous is because of his unique style of rapping unlike other rappers he doesn’t stick to one flow he changes multiple times while other rappers stick to one flow and still manages to make music that people like. Evidence of Lil Wayne's fame is the sells figures of his album Tha Carter III which sold over 1 million copies on the first week.
