Table of Contents What is leadership? Leadership Characteristics. Suggested Rules of leadership. Leadership in the Church. Safety Video. Conclusion.

What is Leadership? Leadership is the ability to influence or direct others to perform a certain task or assigned mission. (U.S. Army) Leadership – [root word :lead] to direct on a course or in a direction; to direct the operations, activity or performance of; to have charge of; to guide someone or something along the way. (Webster’s Dictionary) Leadership – the ability to inspire and to bring people to faith in Jesus Christ; to enrich and disciple them as whole persons into whatsoever the Lord has commanded, and to lead them to achieve the goals of ministry assigned by Jesus Christ to the church. (David Pl Gushee / Walter C. Jackson) Leadership – the ability to lead believers and non-believers of God to Christ and help them develop into self-taught learners through the aid of the Holy Spirit. (Pastor Westley)

Leadership Characteristics Integrity – speaks of a leader’s loyalty to principle even when disloyalty would bring personal gain. Loyalty – speaks of a leader who is faithful, especially to Jesus Christ, to friends, and to the causes of the kingdom of God. Compassion - speaks of a leader who is sensitive to pains, needs, and celebrations of other people. Courage – speaks of a leader who has fortitude and resilience and who possesses mental and/or moral strength to confront trouble, danger, or evil with tenacity and forcefulness. Strong system of values – speaks of a leader who possesses a deep commitment to cherished values deeply within his or her person. All suggested Characteristics above where extracted from Preparing for Christian Ministry by David P. Gushee and Walter C. Jackson.

Leadership Characteristics Competence – speaks of a leader who has achieved a self-conscious use of gifts, talents, skills, and abilities and especially the ability to know much about how to conduct himself or herself as a leader to others. Persuasion – speaks of a leader able to enlist the eager assistance of others for the task. Intelligence – speaks of a leader who possesses an advanced ability to learn, understand, and reason, one who can apply knowledge to a situation in a creative way and transfer knowledge from other fields of learning appropriately so as to solve current although unrelated problems. Imagination – speaks of a leader who has the ability to visualize methods to achieve a goal or complete a task which are unavailable to the usual five senses. All suggested Characteristics above where extracted from Preparing for Christian Ministry by David P. Gushee and Walter C. Jackson.

Leadership Characteristics Memory – speaks of a leader who has good recall of the lived-in past and who exerts energy to learn from people with longer memories. (Understand history). Vision – speaks of a leader who can construct a future from the raw material of the present that is useful and motivating to the minds and hearts of the followers. Physique – speaks of a leader who is basically healthy in mind and body; such a person cares for the bodies, minds, and spirits of followers in respectful ways—ways to preserve their energy, vigor, and the ability to function. All suggested Characteristics above where extracted from Preparing for Christian Ministry by David P. Gushee and Walter C. Jackson.

Leadership Characteristics Persistence – speaks of a leader who is not a quitter. A Christian leader is so convinced of the value of his or her constituency, as well as the goals to which the group has committed itself, that he or she will continuously persevere. Urgency - speaks of a leader who has learned the single leadership characteristic that is so vital for leadership success that only minimal success will be possible without it. The Christian leader with the characteristic of urgency has a vital sense of timing. Schedules are met on time or ahead of time. Goals are designed in sequence and are met in a timely way, etc. All suggested Characteristics above where extracted from Preparing for Christian Ministry by David P. Gushee and Walter C. Jackson.

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership The Law of the Lid – leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness. “You can find smart, talented, successful people who are only able to go so far because of the limitations of their leadership.” The Law of Influence – the true measure of leadership is influence—nothing more, nothing less. “The only thing a title can buy is a little time—either to increase your level of influence with others or to erase it.” The Law of process – leadership develops daily, not in a day. “To be conscious that you are ignorant of the facts is a great step to knowledge.” –Benjamin Disraeli The Law Of Navigation – anyone can steer the ship, but it takes a leader to chart the course. “A leader is one who sees more than others see, who sees farther than others see, and who sees before others do.”– Leroy Eims. The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and quotes were extracted from the book by that title by John C. Maxwell (unless otherwise stated).

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership 5. The Law of Magnetism – who we are is who you attract. “If you think people are negative, then you better check your attitude.” 6. The Law of Connection – leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand. “It may sound corny, but it’s really true: People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” 7. The Law of The Inner Circle – a leader’s potential is determined by those closest to him. “The leader finds greatness in the group, and he or she helps the members find it in themselves.” 8. The Law of Empowerment – only secure leaders give power to others. “The greatest things happen only when you give others the credit.” The Law of Reproduction – it takes a leader to raise up a leader. “People cannot give to others what they themselves do not possess. Followers simply cannot develop leaders.” The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and quotes were extracted from the book by that title by John C. Maxwell (unless otherwise stated).

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership 10. The Law of E.F. Hutton – when the real leader speaks, people listen. “Being in power is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.” 11. The Law of Solid Ground – trust is the foundation of leadership. “The only thing that walks back from the tomb with the mourners and refuses to be buried is the character of man. This is true. What a man is survives him. It can never be buried.” 12. The Law of Respect – people naturally follow leaders stronger than themselves. “When people respect someone as a person, they admire her. When they respect her as a friend, they love her. When they respect her as a leader, they follow her.” 13. The Law of Intuition – leaders evaluate everything with a leadership bias. “Schwarzkopf was repeatedly able to turn bad situations around as the result of his exceptional leadership intuition.” The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and quotes were extracted from the book by that title by John C. Maxwell (unless otherwise stated).

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership The Law of Buy-In – people buy into leaders then the vision. “The leader finds the dream and then the people. The people find the leader and then the dream.” The Law of Victory – leaders Find a Way for the Team to Win. “When the pressure is on, great leaders are at their best. Whatever is inside them comes to the surface.” The Law of The Big Mo – momentum is a leader’s best friend. “With enough momentum, nearly any kind of change is possible.” The Law of Priorities – leaders understand that activity is not necessarily accomplishment. “There are many things that will catch my eye, but there are only a few things that will catch me heart.” The Law of Sacrifice – a leader must give up to go up. “Sacrifice is an ongoing process, not a one time-payment.” The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and quotes were extracted from the book by that title by John C. Maxwell (unless otherwise stated).

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership The Law of Timing – when to lead is as important as what to do and where to go. “When the right leader and the right timing come together, incredible things happen.” The Law of Explosive Growth – to add growth, lead followers—to multiply, lead leaders. “It’s my job to build the people who are going to build the company.” – John Schnatter. The Law of Legacy – a leader’s lasting value is measured by succession. “A legacy is created only when a person puts his organization into position to do great things without him.” The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and quotes were extracted from the book by that title by John C. Maxwell (unless otherwise stated).

Leadership in The Church It begins with God and shines through You! It depends on you and your willingness to grow! It is centered on you as a follower, a believer, a learner, and a teacher. It should be personal, yet professional. It should increase as you increase, not the opposite. It should be nurtured and respected. It should be shared.
