This presentation is about the Western Region of the United States. This region consists of 13 states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming, as defined by the Census Bureau. They are divided into two smaller units: Mountain and Pacific States.

Capital: Juneau Natural resources: Forests, minerals(i.e. oil, gold, etc.), rivers, lakes and the Pacific Ocean. Landforms: Mountains, forests, rivers, lakes and glaciers. Climate: all four seasons are cooler than any state. Industries: Mining, fishing, logging, oil, tourism and agriculture Interesting facts: You can see the glaciers up-close and you can see the Northern Lights here.

Capital: Sacramento Natural resources: Wind, water (rivers, streams, etc.), hydropower, grasses and solar. Landforms: Mountains, valleys, deserts, plains, and lakes. Climate: Coast line-mild fall and spring, hot summers. The desert is hot during the day and cold at night. The Sierra Nevada Mountains-it is cold. The Central Valley is hot and humid. Industries: Farming, electronics, vehicles and movies. Interesting facts: It has many large fault lines, the highest point is Mt. Whitney at 14,494 ft. and the lowest point is Death Valley at -282 ft.

Capital: Honolulu Natural resources: Agriculture. Landforms: Mountain valleys, volcanoes, sea cliffs, and canyons. Climate: Mild temperatures throughout the year, moderate humidity, persistence of northeasterly trade winds, significant differences in rainfall within short distances, and infrequent severe storms. Industries: Tourism and agriculture. Interesting Facts: The only state surrounded by the Pacific Ocean on all sides.

Capital: Salem. Natural resources: Lumber and wheat. Landforms: Mountains, lakes, rivers and waterfalls. Climate: Overall is mild. Industries: Lumber and farming. Interesting facts: It has the only state flag that displays different images on both sides.

Capital: Olympia Natural resources: Timber, agriculture, hydropower and fishing. Landforms: Mountains, rivers, bays and a plateau. Climate: Varies on the location in the state. Industries: Aerospace, clean energy, forest products, global health and life sciences, information and communication technology, manufacturing, marine technology, value-added agriculture and food processing, and tourism. Interesting facts: It has five major volcanoes. The state fruit is the Apple.

Capital: Phoenix Natural resources: Mineral mining, energy mining, lower Colorado River Basin and wetlands. Landforms: mountains, canyons, plateaus and mesas. Climate: Ranges in temperature and precipitation are extreme. Industries: Mining, skin care products, candles and energy plants. Interesting Facts: Is the 48 th state and has the world’s largest solar telescope.

Capital: Denver Natural resources: Petroleum, coal, sand and gravel, uranium, oil deposits and natural gas. Landforms: Mountains, desert and canyons. Climate: Various temperatures and precipitation. Industries: Tourism, mining and agriculture. Interesting fact: It was the only state to turn down the Winter Olympics in 1976.

Capital: Boise Natural resources: Timber, mineral deposits and water. Landforms: Mountains, rivers and lakes. Climate: It depends on the part of the state that you are in. Mountains-cold, rivers and lakes-mixed. Industries: Agriculture, mining and lumber. Interesting fact: The deepest river gorge in North America is Hells Canyon-7,900 ft. deep, deeper than the Grand Canyon.

Capital: Helena Natural resources: Fertile soil, minerals and timber. Landforms: Mountains, rivers and lakes. Climate: Hot summers and cold winters. Industries: Mining, agriculture, livestock and tourism. Interesting fact: Has the largest grizzly bear population in the lower 48 states.

Capital: Carson City Natural resources: Water, minerals and agriculture. Landforms: Deserts, mountains, rivers and lakes. Climate: Depends on your location in the state. Industries: Tourism, mining and agriculture. Interesting facts: The state name means “snow covered.” It was the 36 th state.

Capital: Santa Fe Natural resources: wind, minerals, timber and agriculture. Landforms: Rivers, lakes, and mountains. Climate: Sunny, with few very hot days and very cold days. Industries: Mining, energy, lumber, and farming. Interesting facts: The only town in the U.S. to ever be invaded by a foreign army is Columbus, NM. Santa Fe is the nation’s oldest capitol.

Climate: It is extremely various due to the fact that most of the state is mountainous. Industries: Mining, farming, agriculture and tourism. Interesting fact: The Great Salt Lake is 3-5 times saltier than the ocean.

Capital: Cheyenne Natural resource: Grasslands and rivers. Landforms: Rivers, lakes, plains and mountains. Climate: It has a relatively cool climate. Industries: Farming, mining, oil, natural gas and tourism. Interesting fact: This state has 5 national forests, 2 national parks and 16 state parks.
