7.8A Catastrophic Events Vocabulary List #8

Warm Up Match the words lettered A – E with the correct description or definition in Nos. 1 – 5 A- Condensation B. Evaporation C. Volcanic Eruption D. Earthquake E. Hurricane 1. Sun shines on water, Water is heated, Water turns into vapor, and vapor enters the air 2. Water vapor cools, Condenses into droplets, Droplets create clouds 3. A disaster based on wind speed using different scales causing a lot of damage over a large area. 4. Short periods of mild to intense shaking of ground 5. Openings of the Earth’s crust where magma escapes

Drought An unusually long period of dry weather that lasts long enough to cause supply shortages

Hurricane a huge storm! It can be up to 600 miles across and have strong winds spiraling inward and upward at speeds of 75 to 200 mph. Hurricanes only form over really warm ocean water of 26°C or warmer.

Earthquake Vibration of Earth’s surface that occurs after a release of energy in the Earth’s crust

Tsunami An unusually large sea wave produced by a seaquake or undersea volcanic eruption

Volcano A mountain that forms when molten rock, called magma, is forced to Earth’s surface. Covered in ash. New soil will need to be created which leads to reduction in plants and animals

Wildfire Any fire that spreads uncontrollably and is hard to extinguish.

Heat Transfers Radiation: complete process in which energy is emitted by one body, transmitted through an intervening medium or space, & absorbed by another body. Conduction: heat from one object to another caused by temperature difference Convection: heat from one place to another by the movement of fluids

Population Two or more of the same species.

Species A type of organism.

Asteroid Numerous small celestial bodies that revolve around the sun.

Salinity The amount of dissolved salt in a body of water.

Storm Surge An abnormal rise of the sea along a shore, caused primarily by the winds of a storm.
