FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAINING for Office Staff

INTRODUCTION  UC ANR requires all employees willing to use a fire extinguisher to receive training and have a fundamental knowledge of fire safety and proper fire extinguisher use.

OBJECTIVES  Know the different types of fire extinguishers and their fire ratings  Know what consist of a monthly inspection of fire extinguishers  Be able to effectively use a fire extinguisher

FIRE EXTINGUISHER TYPES At the centers, there are three different types of fire extinguishers:  Chemical (Dry Powder) (A,B,C rated)  Water (A rated)  Halon (C rated)

FIRE EXTINGUISHER TYPES (continued)  The chemical (dry powder) ABC rated fire extinguisher is the only extinguisher issued at the office.  The ABC rated extinguisher uses a non-toxic and non-poisonous dry powder (Ammonium Phosphate) and can be an irritant if inhaled. Seek medical attention if inhaled in large amount.

FIRE CLASS RATINGS There are three types of fire class ratings to be aware of:  A Combustibles (wood, paper, cloth)  B Flammables (gasoline, grease)  C Electrical (appliances)

PASS SYSTEM The PASS system is a memory method to assist in the proper use the fire extinguisher  P = PULL (pull the pin)  A = AIM (aim hose at base of fire)  S = SQUEEZE (squeeze the handle)  S = SWEEP (sweep back and fourth)

FIRE EXTINGUISHER INSPECTION The required monthly inspection consist of:  Extinguisher is mounted in assigned location  Access is not obstructed and sign is visible  Extinguisher is charged (needle in green)  Lock pin is in place and secured  Annual service tag is on fire extinguisher  No physical damage to fire extinguisher

USE AND LIMITS Fire extinguishers should only be used for extinguishing small fires such as appliances, waste baskets and small product containers. Do not use fire extinguishers to attempt to extinguish a burning building or natural gas leak

CONCLUSION  At the end of this training session, you will know how to effectively use a fire extinguisher to extinguish a small fire.
