The SHAWMARI Reserve opened in1975. The main purpose of the reserve is to protect rare species of wildlife in the Middle East in danger from hunting and habitat destruction, and to increase their numbers. It is also an important educational centre for local people, children and tourists. The centre includes museum and breeding enclosures where the animals can be seen very close, like in azoo. This is very popular with young people and is a wonderful place for school outings.huntinghabitatbreeding

One of the most important projects is the Arabian Oryx breeding programme. The orys is a natural inhabitant of the Arabian peninsula, but the last Oryx in the wild was killed in Oman in1972.However,10years earlier, two wildlife organisations had taken nine Oryx from different countries and established a World Survival Herd. inhabitant This herd grew, and in1978 the SHawmari Reserve brought eleven Oryx to Jorden.Because of its breeding programme, there are now over 200in the reseve. In 2002,some Oryx were taken to an enclosure in Wadi Ram. enclosure

This is the first step towards reintroducing the Arabian Oryx into its natural home. Other endangered animals the SHawmari Reserve include ostriches, gazelles and onagers. There are also a lot of desert plants, including atriplex, antural food source for the onager and Oryx. To see the animals, visitors can enter the Oryx enclosure on RSCN1 guided safari trips. The animals roam freely, so you have to look very carefully! The observation tower offers another exciting opportunity to watch birds and wildlife.roam freely 1Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature
