ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) is also known as anti skid brakes, modern ABS systems electronically monitor the speed of the wheels and regulate the hydraulic pressure accordingly. The aim is to maximize braking power while preventing the wheels from locking and skidding. ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM 1

ABS CONTROL RANGE FOR VARIOUS TYRE AND ROAD CONDITIONS 3

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM 5

ABS system components include the following: COMPONENTS IN ABS ABS system components include the following: Wheel speed sensor Electronic control unit (ECU) Modulator assembly Warning light. 6

WHEEL SPEED SENSOR 7

ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT 8

MODULATOR ASSEMBLY: The hydraulic modulator assembly regulates pressure to the wheel brakes when it receives commands from the control unit. The modulator assembly can maintain or reduce pressure to the brakes, but it cannot increase pressure over the level it receives from the master cylinder, it also can never apply the brakes by itself. The modulator assembly consists of three high- speed electric solenoid valves two fluid reservoirs and a return delivery pump equipped with inlet and outlet check valves. The modulator electrical connecter and controlling relays are concealed under a plastic cover on the top of the assembly. 9

WARNING SYSTEM: The warning light blinks or the alarms and the following critical conditions: If the safety circuitry senses the problem of malfunctions during self-testing. In the case of, the battery voltage drops below the minimum allowable level. 10

ABS BRAKES 13

ADVANTAGES: It minimizes the stopping distance in slippery roads without wheel lock. It guides the wheel within the road during cornering. Performance characteristics are satisfactory for different road conditions and tires It is more reliable as it does not disturb the normal braking system. This system is feasible under mass production and usage. 14

CONCLUSIONS: It has been seen that, in most of the cases the effect of the anti lock device on braking system reliability is positive. Further characteristic such as retention of stability, with response direction control not care of human response in the case of locking increase the utility of this intelligent system. This braking system is seen has keeping pace with the development and improvements of friction brake together with control device makes still more contribution to the safe vehicle of the future, more over the customer is assured of quality, reliability and trouble free performance of the safety system. 16
