1 Cub Master’s Tips and Tricks

To be a successful Cub Master you need to: –Be Enthusiastic –Be Organized –Be Trained –Have lots of Help

Be Enthusiastic –Always remember that your attitude will affect the attitude of the boys, the leaders, parents, and (most importantly) how well YOU do YOUR job!

Cub Masters Tips and Tricks Be Organized –Planning is the KEY Conduct a Monthly Leaders’ Meeting Attend Monthly Roundtables Have your Pack Committee in place Adult participation Delegate 4

Cub Master’s Tips and Tricks Be Trained –I can’t emphasize enough the importance of being 100% Pack Trained. –There are 4 specific training courses that are mandatory for completion. They are: Youth Protection Fast Start Leader Specific This is Scouting –Who needs the training?: –Cub Master –Tiger Den Leader –Wolf/Bear Den Leader –Webelos Den Leader –Committee Chairman –Committee Members –Pack Trainer I came up with a PowerPoint presentation that our Pack Trainer uses to get our Pack 100% trained.

Cub Master Tips and Tricks Have Lots of Help –To me this is the MOST important part of being a successful Cub Master. With a good committee you can then proceed to plan your pack’s program. This should be done during your monthly leaders meeting. As the Cub Master, you have to implement many of the decisions made by the committee and be sure to make your thoughts known during the meeting. You should participate in all the Important decisions made by the committee. –In the Cub Scout Leader Book, use the pack meeting planning sheet.

Cub Master’s Tips and Tricks Pack Meetings –Don’t be a One Man Show Pack Meetings usually last 1 hour. It’s a lot easier and things run smoother when you are prepared. Use your Assistant Cub Master, Committee members to help. Plan and Prepare!!! –Vary the Pace Keep things moving at different speeds, different volumes, and different moods. Use songs or cheers to lively things up, and stories and ceremonies to slow them down. Build toward the big event of your meeting. Always make it special. –Involve Parents Don’t let them sit at the back of the room and talk. They should be drawn into every part of the meeting – especially ceremonies and audience participation stunts. Have the occasional game just for the parents – the Kids will love it. –End your Pack Meetings with The Cub Master Corner. Located on your Pack Resource Sheet you receive at Roundtable.

Cub Master’s Tips and Tricks Leader Recognitions –Not only do your cubs get awards, but your leaders also get recognized with leader knots. –How do your leaders earn their knots? The leader will use the Progress report cards –It has 4 parts: »Training »Tenure »Performance – 4 Roundtables or University of Scouting »District Action

Cub Master’s Tips and Tricks Fundraising –The keys of a successful pack fundraiser is: Planning, Planning, Planning Having a Goal – ex. $250 Challenge Adult help Spreadsheets – Popcorn and Candles Notebook (Diary) – to log the Roses and Thorns

Cub Master’s Tips and Tricks As for Tricks –Whistle… This is my best trick that works great. I use at Camp, Den, and Pack Meetings.

Cub Master’s Tips and Tricks Another Trick: –Getting your leadership to attend the monthly roundtables. Incentives –To be awarded the Cub Scout Mascot for the entire month – To show off at Pack Events –Material can be used at your Den and Pack Meetings –So the leaders know what is going on in their District –Have bead contests… –You get Balloo Bucks…. Used in the Chinese auction at June Roundtable Picnic… You could win a Camper ship for Camp Merz or Elk Lick.
