Matriculation March 10, :45-5:00

WHAT IS MATRICULATION? Matriculation is a process that enhances student access to the California Community Colleges and promotes and sustains the efforts of credit students to be successful in their educational endeavors. The goals of matriculation are to ensure that all students complete their college courses, persist to the next academic term, and achieve their educational objectives. It is not an event, IT IS A PROCESS THAT INVOLVES THE ENTIRE COLLEGE.

WHY DO THE COLLEGES NEED TO PROVIDE MATRICULATION? To ensure that equal educational opportunity for all students To provide supportive educational services To provide the means for students to set realistic goals and fully understand the pathways to their success and to ensure that students are not excluded from appropriate services

THE CREATION OF MATRICULATION AB3 THE SEYMOUR-CAMPBELL MATRICULATION ACT OF 1986 STUDENT MATRICULATION: A PLAN FOR IMPLEMENTATION 1987

STUDENT MATRICULATION : A PLAN FOR IMPLEMENTATION TWO PRIMARY GOALS: –STUDENT SUCCESS –INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS

INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS PARTNERSHIP OF STUDENT SERVICES AND INSTRUCTION SYSTEMWIDE ACCOUNTABILITY EFFICIENT USE OF DISTRICT RESOURCES INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH

IMPLEMENTATION BY COMPONENT 1. ADMISSIONS/ STANDARDS –A PROCEDURE FOR PROCESSING THE APPLICATION Points to consider: 1. How do your students apply? Phone, internet, arena registration 2. How do your students register? In what order? 3. What is the process to change class schedule? for add, drop, withdrawal, etc.

IMPLEMENTATION BY COMPONENT 2. ORIENTATION –INFORM STUDENTS OF THEIR RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBLITIES, COLLEGE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES, COMPLAINT PROCEDURES, EXEMPTION POLICIES, CHALLENGES TO PREREQUISITES AND OTHER LIMITATIONS ON ENROLLMENT –MODES: ARENA, VIDEO, ONE ON ONE, WRITTEN – 1. Is Orientation mandatory at your campus before students register?

IMPLEMENTATION BY COMPONENT 3. ASSESSMENT=English and Math –HOLISTIC –ADVISORY –ALL NON-EXEMPT STUDENTS –ONLY APPROVED INSTRUMENTS –MULTIPLE MEASURES COMPANION MEASURES THAT MAKE SENSE PLACEMENT INTO THE CURRICULUM, NOT ADMISSIONS

IMPLEMENTATION BY COMPONENT 4. COUNSELING AND ADVISEMENT –MEET STUDENTS’ NEEDS FOR ADVISEMENT –EXPLAIN USE OF STUDENT EDUCATIONAL PLAN –STUDENT EDUCATIONAL PLAN COURSE SELECTION GOALS FOR COMPLETION REGULAR REVIEW AND REVISION

IMPLEMENTATION BY COMPONENT 5. STUDENT FOLLOW-UP –POST ENROLLMENT EVALUATION OF NON- EXEMPT STUDENTS –EARLY INTERVENTION Undecided majors Students on probation Basic Skills –APPROPRIATE REFERRALS –POSITIVE AND NON-POSITIVE FEEDBACK

IMPLEMENTATION BY COMPONENT 6. COORDINATION AND TRAINING –FACULTY AND STAFF TRAINING IN MATRICULATION –DISSEMINATION OF RESEARCH –LOCAL MATRICULATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE: Is this an active committee? Are VocEd faculty on the committee?

IMPLEMENTATION BY COMPONENT 7. RESEARCH AND EVALUATION –Validation of Assessment Instruments –Analysis of student Outcomes, Utilization of data for curriculum changes, Placement rules, district resources in relation to student needs, exemption categories –Documentation of services by students via matriculation Process.

IMPLEMENTATION BY COMPONENT 8.PREREQUISITES, COREQUISITES, ADVISORIES ON RECOMMENDED PREPARATION –PRE AND COREQUISITES MUST BE ENFORCED –MATRICULATION GOVERNS PROCEDURES FOR ESTABLISHING PREREQUISITES--IT DOES NOT GOVERN INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES

Is your College Matriculation Plan working for your students? Some things to consider: –1. Technology advancements –2. Distance Ed. –3. Matriculation cuts, no more site visits –4. The shift to SLO’s and away from Matriculation –5. The influence of the four year university and the focus on transfer

–6. Underprepared students, CAHSEE’s impact, Home Schoolers, and other local influences –7. FTES, ethics, and prioritizing resources –8. Cuts to staff development –9. Community colleges expected to do more, with less –10. Matriculation means collaboration amongst the campus community. Do you have college support and resources to hire the faculty and support services?

Student Access: Barriers to Occupational Programs 1. What do more students want after they have chosen a major in VocEd: –1. Streamlined courses, support services Step by step planning Clear information that doesn’t change The perception of minimal hurdles and hassle to register in the classes they need If I need help, can I get it?, how do I get it? –2. Timeline for goal completion –3. Cost---Financial Aid available-Students want the bottom line –4. Job Placement

MATRICULATION RESOURCES CCCCO WEBSITE Arnold Bojorquez,

Technical Assistance Staff also provide technical assistance in the areas of prerequisites, assessment, and matriculation plan review, in addition to administering the matriculation budget: allocations, recycling funds, and special project grants and contracts.

Discussion –What is happening at your campus? –Do you really understand how students end up on your roster? –Are students prepared for your level of curriculum? –Do you need a prerequisite or corequisite to assist with your student success? –Is the Voced faculty voice represented at matriculation committee meetings?
