The Web of data with meaning... By Michael Griffiths.

 Right now, the World Wide Web contains virtually an endless amount of information in the form of documents. We use computers to search for these documents, but they still have to be read and interpreted by humans before any useful information can be taken and utilized. Computers present you with information but don’t understand exactly what information is fittingly relevant to display given the circumstance of most requests. The Semantic Web is going to change this by having data as well as documents on the Web so that machines can process, utilize, assemble, and even act on the data in the most efficient ways. Basically it means to give data meaning for machines to understand what they are displaying on the web.

 The Semantic Web is built on syntaxes which use :  Applying URIs in triple based structures to represent data. (Uniform Resource Identifier) are simply a Web identifier eg. http,  RDF (Resource Description Framework). A language which utilises three URI based structures and will be held in databases, or interchanged on the World Wide Web.  OWL ( Web Ontology Language) is a family of knowledge representation languages for authoring ontologies.  XML ( Extensible Markup Language) a set of rules for encoding documents electronically.

 Evolve the current web so that data has meaning to machines.  Allow users and computers to use, find, share, publish and create information more efficiently.  A solution to the limitations of HTML.

CURRENT WEBSEMANTIC WEB

cat - A non semantic web tag. Cat - An example of a semantic web tag with same information. Everything has a URI. Another example: Source: Wikipedia

 Semantic web is still a project and only experimental applications have been made for example FOAF-project. FOAF is a website based on Semantic Web syntaxes.

ADVANTAGESDISADVANTAGES  More exciting world of web, richer user experience.  More process able information is available  People could Work, learn and exchange knowledge effectively  May be Inconsistent.  Users could take advantage of the system and manipulate URIs.  Time consuming to create and publish content.

By Michael Griffiths. In conclusion Semantic Web will give knowledge to computers so that they will know what they are displaying on web pages.
