VICTORY IN THE WORLD WAR II

From the depth of the history One of the most important holidays in the USA, UK, Canada and almost all European countries is VE day (Victory in Europe day) that held on May 8 th. It commemorates the end of the Second World War, when the forces of Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allied forces. The Second World War lasted 6 years from 1939 to 1945 in Europe and Asia. In European part of the world it finished on May 8 th when Soviet troops captured Berlin and the German High Command signed an unconditional surrender document. In Asian part it lasted till August (Japan surrended on 15 August 1945, ending the war in Asia and cementing the total victory of the Allies over the Axis) and now is called Victory in Japan Day.

From the depth of the history Why do we celebrate Victory Day on may 9 th ? Since the Soviet Union was to the east of Germany, it was May 9 Moscow Time when the German military surrender became effective, which is why Russia and most of the former Soviet republics commemorate Victory Day on 9 May instead of 8 May.

Victory in Europe ceremonies today Now the 8 th of May is an opportunity to commemorate and reflect on the experiences of the Second World War, an occasion to remember those who died and why. It also offers a focus for thinking about wars and combats past and present. In England the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall attend ceremonies in remembrance of the end of World War II and lay wreaths at Cenotaph.
