Chapter 14: Aromatic Compounds Nomenclature of substituted benzenes; Criteria for aromaticity (conjugation, delocalization, resonance, Huckel’s Rule); Examples of aromatic compounds and ions; IR & NMR of benzene. NOTE: Beginning with Chapter 15, I will use the white board and document camera for lecture (not power point). Be prepared to take notes!

Nomenclature of Benzene Mono-Substituted Benzene (“benzene” is the parent name): substituent name + benzene chlorobenzene ethylbenzenecyclopropylbenzene Benzene as a substituent (“phenyl” group): 3-phenyl-2-pentanol(2R,3R)-

Nomenclature of Benzene Common Names (you must learn these): toluene phenol benzoic acid acetophenone benzaldehyde benzyl alcohol

Nomenclature of Benzene Di-substituted benzene. ID the “parent,” then use the lowest numbering system or ortho, meta, para designations: 3-chloro-bromobenzene, or para-ethyl phenol meta-chloro-bromobenzene 4-ethyl phenol, or

Nomenclature of Benzene Multi-substituted benzene (3 or more substituents). ID the “parent,” then use the lowest numbering system (no ortho, meta, para): 3,4-dimethyl-bromobenzene I expect you all to learn benzene nomenclature on your own.
