Altered Outlook Matthew 13: "Have you understood all these things?" They said to Him, "Yes." 52 And Jesus said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a head of a household, who brings out of his treasure things new and old."

Altered Outlook Seeking affirmation  Parental examples - one-way conversation communication - “Have you understood all these things? “  Jesus’ examples - differing parables  Disciples reply - “yes”

Altered Outlook  Changing Allegiance - Understanding a scribe - Transformation of a scribe The expositor’s Commentary …”we must understand the disciple scribe (head of household) to be bringing things out of his heart out of his personality, understanding and very being.”

Altered Outlook  Giving the Old and New -Old Offering -New Taste -Jesus said “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” Matt. 5:17

Altered Outlook  Giving the Old and New -Great Gifts Do you remember earlier when I said that once you give the “YES” feed back to a question you then take responsibility for that ‘yes’? A ‘yes’ does not always mean you know and understand completely, but as a disciple you are willing to continue the discipleship journey. The head of a household that says ‘yes’ to Jesus has not only agreed on a lifetime journey of learning, but has also committed themselves to teaching others the way of the Master. A scribe was one revered and respected as a teacher because of their long journey as a disciple of another. We all have the responsibility of a respected scribe to pass along not only the old things, old stories of God’s faithfulness grace and mercy… We have the responsibility to share the current/new things that God is doing in our lives through His faithfulness, grace, mercy and word.

Things to Remember and Do 1. When one says “yes” to Jesus, He then assumes with that “yes” you will accept the responsibility for what that “yes” represents. 2. When someone moves from being a spectator of the Kingdom of Heaven to being an actual participant in the Kingdom of Heaven a transformation has taken place and a new allegiance declared. 3. The greatest gifts are not things and stuff – the greatest gifts are those both old and new that help enlighten and bring about a transforming altered outlook to what the Kingdom of Heaven really is.
