Fall of Rome EQ: What caused the fall of the Roman Empire?

Political Causes ► A divided empire (E&W) becomes weak ► Gov’t becomes too strict ► Many corrupt officials  People stop supporting the gov’t

Economic Causes ► Romans use too much slave labor ► Heavy taxes  Required to support gov’t ► Farmers leave their land ► Middle class disappears

Military Causes ► Visigoths & Germanic tribes invade the empire ► Roman army starts to lack training and discipline ► Romans forced to hire foreign soldiers to defend extensive borders

Social Causes ► The people become more and more selfish and lazy ► Population declines  War  disease
