CITIZENSHIP Thursday mrnings – topics for discussion on issues about life in; Wembley UK World Question: What happened on Friday and why was it so deadly?

Japan Earthquake Friday March On Friday, March 11, 2011 at 2:46:23 p.m. local time, an 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck Japan, the largest in recorded history. The resulting tsunami that swept the coast has resulted in countless deaths and widespread destruction, and aftershocks are still ongoing. The day after the earthquake, an explosion at Fukushima nuclear power plant caused both fear and confusion about what may happen next….

What caused the Tsunami and why was it so deadly? How does a quake cause a tsunami?

The Tsunami hits

Effects of the Tsunami

The effects: buildings have been dragged around and destroyed, whilst people are in shock.

Amazing stories of survival - man rescued after his house has been dragged 10 miles out to sea by the returning water!

Danger from the nuclear power station damaged by the earthquake.

Responses: The emergency services are trained to deal with the effects of earthquakes but were not prepared for anything on this scale

Discuss: How would you cope if you were faced with a natural disaster of that scale? Discuss: How would you cope if you were faced with a natural disaster of that scale?
