 Materials:  Notebook  Pen/pencil/highlighter  Blank printer paper & colored pencils/markers  Unit 6/7 Synthesis Essay assignment sheet  Basic Essay Structure sheet

 Work together with your partner to create the BEST sandwich you can imagine. Be descriptive.  Draw it on a piece of printer paper – use markers or colored pencils! 7 minutes!

 Take your sandwich picture and tape it to the wall  Come get a star sticker from me  Walk around and look at sandwiches  Put your star sticker on your favorite!

**An essay is like a sandwich  Both have a beginning, a middle, and an end  Structure  Both have a central “idea”  Content  Both can be enjoyable or awful, depending on how they are constructed!!  Structure AND Content Take notes in your journal or on your “Basic Essay Structure” sheet!!

 The purpose of a body paragraph in an essay is to substantiate a manageable “chunk” of the thesis  Topic Sentence  Transition + direct quote + citation  Summarize/analyze  Transition + direct quote + citation  Summarize/analyze  Concluding Sentence  Structure AND Content both matter!! Take notes in your journal or on your “Basic Essay Structure” sheet!!

**Together with your partner, on the back of your sandwich picture: 1. In your own words, define “synthesis essay” 2. Identify one element of synthesis writing that you and your partner both struggle with (weakness) 3. Identify one element of synthesis writing that you and your partner both succeed with (strength) 4. Extension: create a real-world scenario in which a person would need to synthesize information. Describe this scenario.

 Review essay prompt  Identify 3-5 texts from your Unit Rubric to use in your essay  Annotation texts  OPTIC visual texts  Current Event articles  Write a “working” thesis statement  Create a pre-write and make an outline **Content: answer the prompt / substantiate your thesis **Structure: “basic essay structure sheet”
