The Outsiders Vocabulary

Editorial A newspaper or magazine article that gives the editor’s or publisher’s opinion on some issue, rather than simply reporting facts. The man read the editorial to view the artist art.

Hesitation To stop or wait for a time. The women hesitated when the police pulled her over to the side.

Incredulous Hard to believe or imagine; amazing. The boy was incredulous when he got a birthday present.

Nonchalantly Not showing much interest or effort; cool; casual. The teenager was nonchalantly when he failed his test.

Rebellious An armed revolt against the government. A rebellious group tried to burned down the capitol.

Reputation A general opinion of someone or something that is held by the public; what others think a person or thing is like. The girl’s reputation was ruined when she got wet in public.

Rivalry A person who tries to be better at something than another. The boy’s rivalry went too far when they tried to see who could jump a fire.

Sarcasm Using sharp biting remarks or impressions to insult or make fun of someone. The boy’s sarcasm went too far when he insulted the teacher.

Sympathetic Showing kindness or sympathy. The girl was sympathetic when she helped the old lady across the street.

Unfathomable A unit of length equal to six feet. The boy was unfathomable.
