Rob Tice Vocabulary Management Group The Aspect VBE

Aspect - what is it? Apsect - Adopting Standards and Specifications for Educational Content eContentPlus initiative 30 month best practice network 22 partners 15 countries

VBE - overview VBE – Vocabulary Bank for Education Terminology service designed to be used by both systems and human users Builds on experience gained during the provision of a terminology service for UK education (completely new software base) Multilingual content (aim to have at least 20 different languages) Multilingual access

What services, what purpose? Terminology publishing Provide one place for all vocabularies to reside Terminology management Allow collaborative management (and translation) of vocabularies Terminology history Allow any changes to the terminology to be tracked and visible Facilitate easy use (and just as important reuse) of terminology Real time searching Static urls for all content and services

Technical approach Data model independent of interchange format Term or concept – cant we have both? Different descriptive schemas for different users, formats and models Plug in-based import and export to facilitate extensibility SOLR based searching for speed and scalability

Approach to mapping All data has an originating context Terminology which is reused provides access to all other instances in the bank Can be carried out In line In separate mapping vocabularies Using facets

What matters to the users How can it help me? How much work will it involve? How easy is it to use?
