"From values to future farming systems" Community dairy by Berend Jan Wilms Who is Berend Jan Wilms? A team player A dairy farmer My farm in a nutshell Partnership with brother 115 cows, 105 hectares My location: Schoonebeek (rural area in the eastern part of the Netherlands, close to the German border)

"From values to future farming systems" Community Dairy In the project ‘Animal in Balance’ the following illustrative concept was developed for a Community Dairy as it might look in 2025.Community Dairy I want to explore the opportunities available to me for realising this system. In this presentation, I will explain the steps I intend to take to realise this.

"From values to future farming systems" Goal: the maximum return, from myself and my environment From ambition to transition Entrepreneurial vision combined with an awareness of social / natural landscape innovation The nascent idea From an ideal to a concrete scenario Action <> reaction….plan of action Research and analysis By working together, we all benefit!

"From values to future farming systems" Het idee in spé

"From values to future farming systems" Which factors will have an impact on me? Many changes: Dairy market Environment Time Land market and money market Colleagues Political climate, European regulations and global treaties Opportunities -> restructuring, research, new business forms, cooperation, energy production Threats -> return on investment, money market, political climate, town and country planning

"From values to future farming systems" The strategy Vision Optimisation within one’s own company has its limits Extra returns can be achieved outside one’s own company My mission Sustainable production which provides a satisfactory return on investment The driving factors that motivate me: Economic prospects A desire to realise innovative developments My environment Working as a dairy farmer is a fantastic profession

"From values to future farming systems" From an “ideal image” for 2025 to a reality in 2015? Key points: Improving yields / returns by cooperating with colleagues Growth through specialisation in young stock / milking cows Arable farming provides high-quality feed (concentrates) Collective fermentation of manure Developing new production location Optimising scale of operations together with others Restructuring older production location Integrating production of oil and wind energy into town and country planning framework Well-being / care versus need for labour Better match between demand for labour and supply of labour Acquiring initial knowledge and orientation with regard to development of future operational system

"From values to future farming systems" Action<>reaction From thinking to doing: Communication with my environment Considering perspectives on the future as seen by other entrepreneurs Searching for mutual business and economic interests Trying out various forms of cooperation Inspiring my environment Working in a project-focused fashion and building a fund Acquiring knowledge focused support

"From values to future farming systems" Community dairy By working together, we all benefit!
