Some Thoughts About WebQuests by Bernie Dodge What Is A WebQuest? Analysis of Article by Steven King

Want to spice up your lessons? As a teacher, do you find yourself using the same format over and over? Are you looking for something new? Try a WebQuest.

What is a WebQuest? Think of it as an activity students can do on the internet. The teacher sets up the lesson right on the computer and all the resources and templates are embedded in the presentation.

What to Know? WebQuest usually lasts 1-3 periods. Students generally work in groups. This is a good way of implementing cooperative learning. Resources should be embedded into the project. For example, if students are exploring Reader Awards, the resource for finding this information could be embedded in the Quest, like this one. http://www.ucalgary.ca/~dkbrown/index.html

Aspects of a WebQuest Introduction Task Information Resources Guidance Conclusion Also, there may be motivational elements in the project. It can be single disciplinary or multiple disciplinary.

What Could a WebQuest Be? A searchable database A microworld that allows navigations by students Interactive stories A type of debate Could be a historical figure that students question and then provide answers from what they know. A template allows the students to present the information.

What Else to Know? Want to know more? Go to http://webquest.sdsu.edu/about_webquests and read the article by Bernie Dodge. It will give you the lowdown about all of it! It’s interesting and a new way of teaching!
